I wouldn't use red oak, it doesn't do well out side in the weather, White oak is the way to go for an outside use.

Red oak is too porous. White oak is better. Honduras Mahogany would be real nice looking & rot resistant too.

Sorry about the double post, the site is a little touchy. Teak is also a great deck wood. http://www.condonlumber.net
