Get a Mallory YLM or YLU and be done with it. Gives you the piece of mind of having new, non-worn internals too.

To answer your question. Yes you will need a coil with a internal resistance of 1.5 ohms. If you are switching from a points system with a external coil. If your mechanical advance is in good condition this is a good choice if you are trying to save money. My distributors are 43 years old and still are in good shape. I did this two years ago and I am very happy with it. Faster starts, engine runs smoother , Even if the distributor bushings have play in them it will not effect the new magnetic pick up like it would with points. If you buy a new distributor which is the ideal way to do it. You will still need a new coil. I did two engines for $260 cnd . So a little less that half the price of getting new distributors . I kept the old points and coils on board as a back up. I know several people that have had the electron conversion for a long time with no problems. If you are using a pertronix conversion just email them when any question you have. They answered mine the next day.

The Mallory product for the small block Chrysler is YLM579AV. (578 for someone like Big D's massive Mopars.)

Not the same as what Prowlersfish is talking about.

Better though, not only cuz I said it instead of him, but because internal coils are crappy unless you have a Honda. :)

And when you get good at that...... Well, all this other crap is tiddlywinks.........

Why do you think I am in love with 671's?

At least there is still a challange left in the world. ;)
