Fiberglass Restoration: or "Too Much Time on My Hands"

Great Styx tune BTW.....

So after blowing up several threads here this morning, and going to my only meeting of the week at 10am I decided I should probably try to get something productive in to the mix today. I walked over to the dock around noon to have a go at cleaning up the superstructure on the F-32. Honestly, its totally in the $hits; or it was anyways. Heres what it looked like when I started in on it:

Then I got out the 800 grit wet paper and started to give it a little "What For", as we like to say around these parts.

Things really started to take a little shape after a couple hours, and a lot of chalk and film, and old wax later.......

Then I got around to the Stbd. side. I knew there were some issues here, but I had no idea what really was going on until I started to get into it. Heres what it looked like after the 800. I know it just looks dirty in this pic, but thats a mess of poorly done glazing putty on there in order to , ostensibly, cover up some scratches.

So I walked back to the garage and broke out the big guns.

When I got the crap off, I started to see why it was put on in the first place. People, please, if finish work isn't your bag thats fine, better to live with it until you can afford a pro than it is to pretend to be one.

So 2 sheets of 400 Wet/Dry later I had all the crap off, (and most of the original scratches too, imagine that. ) If I am going to get it right I am going to have to sand more and then get my buddy Ed over here with some gel and a vac bag. He'll hook it up good. Probably will wait till next spring though unless he happens to be starving for work.

Then I started in buffing back on the port side with some 1500 grit compound. I like using this stuff for medium cut.

I was able to get some of the port side done with a first compounding, but it became dinner time, and I had already been at it about 5 hours. I decided to knock off until tomorrow at that point.

i figured you knew something about AJ since you mentioned benetton.... i actually never owned anything from the 'colours' collection from AJ. or chess king. i've always been a jeans and t-shirt/sweat shirt/thermal shirt type of guy. sweat pants (olive drab thank you very much with the usmc logo on it---from a friend of mine) and tank top for the gym. shorts in the summer, hiking shorts that is. pockets pockets pockets. the only thing remotely formal i wear is my uniform and even then i skip wearing the optional tie. i HATE ties. i'll tell you what. you come down and help me w/ my onan, and i'll provide the homemade brisket and chicken soup. i'll even toss in a few matzoh balls. maybe a little gefelta fish to go with that? :D :D

I only do the whitefish&pike in jellied broth with extra red horseraddish.

Buy a governor spring. They are like 4 bux. Let me know what happens after that. I am not free until October.
