Engine temperature overheat

Hey all!
Just bought a 1984 Trojan 9 meter. It has the 350's in it and has new risers and all new hoses, water pumps rebuilt last summer prior to use. The old owner said it has about 5-8, yes 5 to 8 hours all last Summer. He was getting up in age and could not do what he wanted to so he decided Tim sell. I bought it and ran it up from Ocean City, Md, to Cape May, NJ. The port engine ran at 170 degrees the entire run, 2800 RPM's at 20 knots with a following sea. Awesome riding boat and a great ride. At Cape May inlet it hit 180 and started to shut down, I cut it back and it cooled right down to 150, ran at 1500 RPMs the rest of the way.
Any suggestions? I am going to pull the pump, thermostat to start but if you guys know any other tricks with these I am open to them. Thanks!
Tim
