Anybody here have one on their boat.
Vertical or horizontal-My anchor is towards the port side and not the center.
Think 200" of anchor rope is long enough or overkill.
I want a nice looking one
thanks

I have a horizontal Vetus Maxwell RC-8 on my tricab. I bought it in part because the case is o-ring sealed. Some Lewmars have no seal. I run 9/16" line and 5/16" chain. I would not recommend smaller on a 36' boat. As for length of your rode, it depends on where you anchor. Make sure that you use enough chain too.

Bought the kit from-----Good Windlass-----comes with windlass ,all switches etc, anchor rode with chain designed to work together--- also got anchor roller from them--- this stuff was factory installed on these boats --- I just installed the roller and windlass, could not have been easier, real nice stuff and all made in the U.S.---- just have to wire it---- they are very helpful--- Mike

I second the Good windlass (really, it came in second. I would have bought if I hadn't bought the Maxwell). I didn't buy that brand because they can't take chain -- only rope. But I do like the built-in bollard. Remember that the windlass shouldn't take the strain of the rode when you are on the hook. You need to cleat the line to something after you set the anchor.

Good makes a rope/chain windlass along with a rope only type that came on many Trojans

To add a bit--- the model I have is chain, rope and it is automatic--- meaning it has a free fall and it locks so that cleating off is not needed, although would probably be wise overnight-- Mike

i've always been taught to cleat, regardless, if for no other reason than redundancy.

What do you mean by cleat. with the anchor all the way up-do you mean securing it so the weight of the anchor is not carried by the windlass?

I can't believe that he is not on the forum right this second, but I'm sure that what Aaron means is that when anchored, attach the rode to a cleat between the anchor roller and the windlass. That way, you have both the cleat and the windlass to act as redundant holding points.
