water temp gauge not working

I was going to go out but just ran the engines for awhile and changed my mind.
I noticed the starboard water temp not working-the engine did not seem hot so I went up top and that gauge is not working either so I think it might be the sensor unless there is a fuse in the circuit.
I think if I take the lead off the sensor and measure to ground it should read somewhere around 600 to 800 ohms with the ohm meter on the 1K scale.
I didn't have the meter at the boat but will bring it tomorrow. I know there is a way to check out the gauges themselves but if both are not working then I think it is the sensor.

If you have American Standard gauges and sensor the needles should go full scale when you ground the signal wire to the engine block.

I don't remember but they are two different gauges so I won't know until I get back to the boat.
Thanks for the tip.

Do I just have to have the battery switch on or do I also have to have the ignition set to on when grounding the wire?

You will need to have the ignition set to on with the battery switch on.

I went there today and it was 86 degrees outside and maybe 90's inside the boat and I turned on the AC.
I opened up the engine hatch and disconnected the lead fron the water gauge sensor.
I measured with the ohmeter and it read 680 .
I looked at the loop connector closely for any buildup or crud and noticed that the wire right at the crimp on the connector was broken almost all the way through except for a tiny sliver that looked like it was held on by the wires protective sleeve.I cut it off and stripped the wire and reconnected to the sensor.
I didn't have one of those crimp type connectors so I will have to get one and do it right.Radio shack I think has them.
Any way I fied up the engines and waited until the needle on the gauges moved which took quite awhile,
Maybe 30 minutes-I ran the engines at 1100 RPM. The port engine gauge moved first to 100 degree mark but the starboard side starts at 120 degrees.
Both gauges were working now and I was happy for about ten seconds.
I glanced down and I felt sick.
I saw water droplets coming from the underside of the port side riser or whatever you call it-Not a steady stream but drop by drop.At first I thought maybe it was humidity and I felt under the riser and felt nothing.
Then I thought maybe it was leaking from a head gasket but the clincher came when I saw a squirt gun type of squirt coming from one of the two round recess indentations in the riser. Like under pressure squirt that shot out horizontally and then not another for a minute or so but it happened about four times while I watched.
What trouble am I in for here. The engine sounds and runs beautiful and didn't overheat but I shut the engines down.
I thought I read if they leak-they can get into the cylinder head and that would be bye bye engine.
any clues. If I have to do anything major I was thing of going to a fresh water system or are my engines to old to benefit from that.

problem is solved.
Manifold had a crack right underneath the chrysler emblem.
I ordered both manifolds from Barrett marina where my boat is kept.
