Fuel filters

Post by srokag44 »

Time to change my fuel filters. There is one mounted to a stringer and downstream of that is another mounted to the engine. Any advice on how to remove and replace these? Do the canisters screw off? Does anyone recognize them enough to tell me where to find a replacement cartridge?

The top filter mounted to the stringer looks similar to my fuel filter. My filter housing does look longer though. To change the fuel filter, shut off all of the fuel valves. Next, remove the screw at the bottom of the housing to drain the fuel into a suitable container. After the housing is empty, use a strap wrench to unscrew the housing from the top part that is mounted to the stringer. My fuel filter uses a Fram CCS1136 filter element, but I would open your filter up and see what is in it to confirm. Your housing looks shorter than my housing.

The bottom filter looks like a standard spin-on fuel filter. Can you see any identifying marks on the current filter? I can't tell from the picture what the specific part number is.

The first filter in the pictures is a water separator/ fuel filter. To replace it, loosen the 9/16" bolt on the top while spinning the canister loose. Inside will be a filter, Napa number CP 3110, available at most Napa Stores.

The second filter is a Crusader filter, number 91606 but you can get a Sierra filter, part number, 29404 at most boating stores. To replace this filter, take a pair of channel locks and lightly grip the canister and turn counter clockwise to loosen, then simply spin off. I find that you only have to hand tighten this canister when done. Don't forget tho replace your carb inlet filter while you're in there...

Thanks! I didn't realize there was a carb inlet filter as well. I will look for that tonight.

My advice is replace all of the blue fuel hoses. I can see one attached to the cartridge filter. On my 11 meter, they went from the fuel tank to the filter and than to the engine. They get brittle and hard and I had one crack underway. They antisiphon valve on the tank stopped the flow. I replace all of mine. Just my opinion. I also replaced the filters with Racor filters. My catridge filter had rust (a lot) in the bottom from water falling out of the gas.

I replaced both of my filters tonight. I didn't find a carb fuel inlet filter. The engine is still having trouble. It will occasionally fire up and run if I give it some throttle. It will stall out if rpm is brought below 1200.

It had been running well this weekend. I had been running at cruise speed for about an hour and then it shut down. I thought the symptoms pointed towards a fuel line clog but after changing the filters I'm not sure anymore.

Any suggestions on what to try next? I was thinking of switching carbs between engines to see if that isolates the problem. Is that a huge PITA to do? Anything I should try first?

Symptom sounds very much like water in the fuel......have you tried to add anything to dry it out?

The starboard engine runs fine still and I have a single fuel tank so I was assuming the fuel is ok and the problem is on just the port engine.

Have you tried adjusting the idle screws (jets)? Its possible that they may be blocked. Turn them in until they bottom out (not tight) while counting the turns, then back them out to where they were originally set. This might clear them. They should normally be set as a rule of thumb about 1 1/2 turns out.

Hope this helps.

I haven't touched the screws yet so I will give that a try tonight. Thanks for the suggestion!

You said you didn't find a carb inlet fuel filter, so here it is, inside this inlet which is highlighted. Remove the inlet with a 1" wrench and unscrew, remove the filter and spring.

I have Edelbrock 1409 carbs. I removed the part that the arrow is pointing to expecting to find a filter behind it but there was nothing there.

With the Edelbrocks, you use an inline fuel filter. If you didn't, you may have trash in it.

2 points to Paul for the idle jet screw suggestion. Turned them all the way in and then backed out to original position. Engine will now start and idle but occasionally stalled when I increased throttle or returned down to an idle. They were each about 4 turns out. Does this indicate that the jets were already clogged and someone had simply opened up the screws to account for it?
