im looking at a 73' f36 with 440's
1 motor needs rebuilt
6.5 onan is intack
salon needs put back together[trim,floors,all interior wood needs redone]
cracked glass everywhere but aluminum frame looks inline not sure y glass is cracked
needs carpet
bilge paint
tanks cleaned
carbs rebuilt
screw holes everywhere
needs updating on upholstery,electronics
but no soft spots anywhere on top
1 stringer sounds a little hollow
needs bottom paint thru hull fittings
and there is more but this is as quick description on its current state

and i love the layout of the 36 fits us perfect

now for the


1971 egg harbor 46' sf
missing mtrs ,needs high dollar diesels
inside is beautiful
its going to cost a fortune to move 16' wide
damage to flybridge so it needs fixed
needs 4 or 5 of everything [pumps,ac units,bilge pumps,more everything just a lot bigger boat]
it has new paint and hardware
missing trannys
mahogany interior
no cracked glass
teak cockpit
updated bathrooms,kitchen,wet bar,ect
i feel like i may have a wine taste with a beer budget on this one.would love to own it but just seems too quick to soon
but should i jump on it because its available

i dont want to spend much money up front i want to buy low and rebuild as i go
my pockets are very very deep
because i have stretched them digging so hard for that last dollar i thought i had

both boats are same price to buy.but after that is where the fun begins

Unless you don't give a hoot about reliability or are are looking for a career

buy a new 22' bowrider.

Deep pockets? Maybe the bottomless pit.

These are FORTY YEAR OLD BOATS. - that's one thing

more important - THESE ARE FORTY YEAR OLD BOATS THAT HAVE BEEN SEVERLY NEGLECTED.

Realistically do you have a real, accurate concept of the true cost to bring these vessels back?

This is not a romantic decision.

It's dollars and cents.

Sounds like the egg needs 150k plus worth of work .(doing it your self) Re powering a 46 sport fish is a major under taking . just a used set of engines and gears could run half that . And after you get done you have a boat worth 60k ? you could take the money and buy something nicer and ready . Is it the one in Dundalk MD ?

The Trojan also could need some $$$ . redoing a engine can easily cost a few grand (again doing it yourself ) the stringer could be a lot of hours worth of work .

Rethink doing a survey .

Ready to go boats can be a lots less costly then bargain fixer upers

between the pile of parts the trojan owner has, and all the new parts and pieces i have, not to mention i have a boat that i have worked on for the last 2 years that may donate towards the cause
my intention is to buy an older boat of this era
and spend a couple years making it what i want.
i think i jumped the gun posting this topic,because im 99% going with the trojan
i have owned several boats from small to large,older to newer.
i still wonder why i do what i do.

the trojan is not perfect by no means
neglected yes
but for the most part gen and port motor are freshly rebuilt with papers
starboard motor went down and po died and was sold off
well the new owner comes along yanks it out of the water and wants to do a bottoms up
after almost three yrs all he did was pull trim out of salon and start stripping teak
po was a heavy smoker so wall paper and head liner has got to come out
someone got trigger happy with the screw gun on the fly bridge
and the glass i just dont understand wouldnt know where to start on replacing it
absolutely love the layout of the f36 and ben looking for the rite one for almost 1.5 yrs
wish i could just buy one ready to go but

I would rethink the survey , most marinas require insurance and you most likely will need a survey to get insurance . And a survey find issues you don't see . better to spend 500 now then find out when its to late .


Things that would worry me : The boat has been sitting for 3 years how can you be sure the other engine is ok and that the genset is ok ? Was it winterized correctly ? Rust and Rust from sitting can lock up a engine . Or rust thru major parts . what about the fuel ? Bad fuel can be costly to deal with .

Look before leaping . Not trying to be negative , just want you aware of what your looking at .

all paperwork is going thru a dealer.my insurance will pick it up site unseen because of that
im bringing the boat to the house to start the rebuild
im replacing all fuel lines,flushing tanks,rebuilding carbs,fixing the motor,replacing risers,thru hull fittings,bottom paint,all teak will be restored,flooring,installing a second a/c unit,painting bilge,probably replace some hardware,polish props
replacing waterlines if bad and so on
i will do all the work myself except for any machine work to heads or block
one thing i didnt do is take a boroscope with me and check under the fuel tanks
i feel like if i find a 36 in good shape and spend 15k plus on it,who is to say it wont have a motor grenade 2 weeks into owning it
or show up to the boat with 40 gallons of fuel in the bilge (and to any thats happen to) its one bad day. Ben there done that
actually both of the above has happened to me
i also figure if i cant pay cash for it
i cant afford it
i understand a survey could show me some surprises
but im not paying a whole lot more than 500 for the boat
now by the time i pay storage to the marina and transport cost it will add up to much more

Nothing wrong with a project. This one sounds like quite the undertaking, but if your prepared for it, it can be a nice way to save a boat destined for the scrap yard, as well as get you on the water in the boat you built.

My 34C was purchased for very cheap and has been brought back to a reliable working condition.

What's the deal with the tiny tractor trailer behind the Trojan?

Looks like quite a project but nothing undoable.

lol. thats mine.i haul oversize loads.
things change quick.i got to my boat yesterday and there was a guy that made an offer on my old chris craft,i took is offer.it will go a long way toward the 36.
it will be a challenge.but nothing a little yelling cussing and maybe a small amount of blood cant fix.
my biggest fear or pet peave in all this,is the screw holes.i have never had to color match anything.
i have over 100 pictures of the 36 in its current state.

Whats wrong with the "donor" boat ?

i put alot of hard work in that boat and had it for three seasons.
built in couch that was killing some backs
the sliding door entrance was half the size it should be
had the v-berth up front with a curtain /no real walls or doors with 12 year old daughter and her friend
and have to fold down couch every morning and night for her to sleep
also while cruising at very low speeds it gets a little hot during the summer and cold in winter

so i had enough with the express cruiser. never again

with a salon i can put in any couch i want
regular size entrance
drive from lower helm with climate control
have private entrance to bathroom
the 12 year old thats going on 20 will have her own room with a door
and 1 more thing we will do is have a pillow top made for the trojan a.s.a.p.
