repowering 34 Sport Express

Hi
I'm a new member from Italy!
I own a 1990 34 Sport Express powered by original Detroit Diesel (J&T) 8.2TI 300hp. Engines has been rebuilt by PO in 2011 and they run well, correct fuel consumption, no visible oil consumption. They smoke a little.
However I'm considering to repower the boat to obtain an higher cruising speed (now 16-18 Kn), no smoke, easiness maintenance here in Italy (this is a big problem...).
Someone did this?
I'm thinking to Yanmar 6LY series rated to 370 or 440 hp as first choice. Second FPT that's easy and cheap to maintain here.
Thanks!
Alberto

The N60 seems to have a good rep . from what I have heard It seems to have a lot in common with the Cumins QSB 6.7 even though it a 5.9L and of course the N67 (6.7L)
i have no hands on with the N60 or N67 not many over here in the states but very common across the pond .I do really like the Cummins 6.7 and I belive they have a lot in common
The Yanmar will be lighter and more compact . The N60 gets its power at lower rpm
Both would be good choices in my opinion . so would Cummins or Volvo assume you have support for them .
With that said make sure You have room for them

For those that have not heard of FPT , it is Fiat Powertrain Technologies They are also know as IVECO Diesels

Everything absolutely right.
I prefer Yanmar for the lower consumption, but the real problem is the space in room as you sad.
Let's see!!
Thanks for your support!

Lower Consumption ?? I don't think you will find much difference , But the FPT may have a edge as its fully electronic .
The yanmar will have a edge on fit however . Are Nani diesel available where your at ?

I repowered from the 454 Crusaders to the Yanmar 6LP 315 horse engines.
Height was an issue in my engine room and the Cummins would not fit without unacceptable, extensive modifications to the hatches.
It basically boiled down to a choice between the electronically controlled Volvo and the mechanically injected Yanmar.
In a saltwater marine environment with less than daily use reliability becomes one of the prime directives.
The Yanmar achieved the goals of the modern marine diesel powerplant, quiet, no smoke, low fuel consumption all without the potential failures of electronic components and connections in the harsh marine environment.
All we need is clean fuel, clean air and good starting batteries.
All things being equal, a mechanical diesel has significant operational and maintenance advantages over common rail models.
Assuming your boat is a 10 meter, the 315 HP LP series delivers a 20-23 knot cruise with a WOT at 27.1 kts.
The 315LP has been discontinued in the states as it does not meet the strict requirements of Tier III emissions.

It may boil down to what will fit . The FPT may be to big or tall ( same foot print of the Cummins ). The Yanmars are very compact , and I believe so are the Nani .
Do have some photos of your boat so we can see exactly what model ? I also am assuming its a 10 meter and there are several styles .

Some photos.
May be it's the boat you call 10 meters. It was build in 1990 when the factory was named Bertram-Trojan (this name appears in all docs I have).

second photo attempt
Both are in Italy, however after further examination they are NOT the same boat.
One has a mid cabin style of transom, the other does not.

Interesting note...the Pershing 31, which is parked next to the 10 meter was designed by the same guy who designed the 10.8 Meter Express.

It's the same boat but there are some little differences. This is normal I think.
Some more photo. As you can see interiors was completely redone in cherry wood.
