Rebuilding water pump

Post by yorklyn »

FYI for you guys. bought 2 major overhaul kits for my sherwood r35 and g102 waterpumps . Had to press off the pulley mount , press off the old bearing , press on the new bearing then press the pulley back on. Wasnt exactly sure how to do this so i picked up a 6ton press at harbor freight for around $50. was able to do everything with it. its a little tough with this small press because the size of the throat made it hard to work with the entire assembly . used a few "macguvier" tricks and rebuilt both today in under a hour. I decided to figure out how to do it myself since sherwood recommends doing a major overhaul every 4 seasons. it really wasnt very hard. if anyone ever wants to try I can walk you through it.

I have done my Sherwood g5s, very easy, I bought HF 20 ton which gives plenty of throat and power. Another tip is for water pump bearings; normally you can find the same bearing at a bearing/seal supply house way less spendy then in a kit, and even possibly the seal itself. I have found most marine parts places are pricey on complete kits so I just buy what I cannot get from local suppliers from them. Wait till you do the bearing on an Onan MKC 6.5, they want $400 + for the bearing. I posted a how to on our website as I made my own using the same bearing from NSK $31 and $160 machining which improved upon Onan's design and works perfect.

I also posted recently a company that has many water pump seals and can rebuild "any water pump". The will sell parts or do the job. :D

The 20 ton press would have made it a breeze. I didnt feel like storing the big one, LOL! I bought two of the major rebuild kits for $119 each. Hopefully they will last a while. Thanks for the link, looks like kellogg has alot of stuff that could really help save you some money.
