Any of you 10m guys have a stern flag?

Post by BobCT »

I've never had one and it figured it's time to fill the flag socket with something. I'm trying to figure out what size pole and flag. I bought an 18" pole and didn't even take it out of the package. I might try the 24" or 30". I don't want something too big as I hear they get noisy and they wind up smacking you in the face underway :)

Generally the flag should be about 1" on the fly for each foot of boat length. You should round up to the next flag size if your boat is in between sizes. The 10 meter would call for about 36" on the fly. The fly is the horizontal measurement with the hoist being the vertical measurement. The flag staff should be sized to fit the flag and whatever clearance you need on your particular boat.

I fly a 24" x 16" American flag from my stern.

It is attached to a detachable, wooden mast.

It was presented to me by my 11 meter Trojan friends, Garth & Roger upon the conclusion of our trip across the "ditch", bringing the boat home, 13 years ago.

That flag is a bit tattered, faded and worn now, but it will continue to fly from my stern as long as it is presentable.

Besides, the smaller flag makes the boat look bigger !

I think a large flag takes away from the boat.

If you research proper flag etiquette, you will see that 1" per foot of boat is the specified minimum. The flag can be larger, which is why you round up rather than round down. Having been a member of the coast guard auxiliary for over 25 years and running countless patrols, the flag sizes are specified and required for operational facilities. The 1" per foot of boat size is for the national ensign. Other flags we use are specified as 5/8" per foot on the fly. You can google "boat flag etiquette size" and check out the various sources. Having said that, there is no law against smaller flags, it is just not "proper".

thanks guys, I went with a 24" mast and recommended flag according to Taylor. I have enough teak so I went with the SS mast and it looks great. It doesn't "fly" a lot on the mid cabin underway though. I guess it needs to loosen up a bit
