Starboard Starter?
Hello All,
Past two days I noticed that when I flick the ignition switch on for the starboard engine, the light comes on and it beeps. Then when I try to toggle the ignition (starter) to fire up the engine, there is NO SOUND.. DEAD and the Emergency light comes on on the dash. The starter does not even begin to kick.. I immediately checked the batteries and they are 100% full. Even if I toggle the emergency, NOTHING. DEAD.. Not a sound.. I flick the switch to off and try it 2-3 times and then randomly it will start up like normal as if nothing happened.. any ideas? When it DOES start up, there is no laboured sound like the starter or engine is strained. Just a normal regular startup
Thanks

Re: Starboard Starter?
Check wire connections on back of switch and cables to starter.

Re: Starboard Starter?
Any ideas what the starter and solenoid look like? Where do I look for them?
Thanks

Re: Starboard Starter?
Make sure transmission is in neutral. Not making the neutral switch will not allow the starter solenoid to fire.

I love you vickyb. It is nice to see someone dive right in and tackle things like you do. The best way to learn things is by doing. I repect you for that. Now to your question.....
Did you get nigel calders book like i suggested in a pm? On page 318 is a picture of a starter and solenoid. The starter is probably located on the output end of the engine, and down low. It is slightly bigger than a soda can, and has big wires and small wires leading to it. Trace all of the big wires leading from your batteries and one will end up at each starter. Check that all of the connections are tight. You might even loosen them a bit, then retighten -- on both ends.
I second the " transmission in neutral " suggestion. There is a switch that prevents starting unless the transmissions are in neutral. Even the slightest bump could cause them to not make contact. Another slight bump, and everything is normal.
Please post when you find out what the problem was. That is what makes this forum so valuable.

I needed a less expensive hobby, so I bought a boat!

Re: Starboard Starter?
X-2 on what kind of engine do you have, GM generally uses starter/switch solenoid combined on the starter, solenoid puts the starter gear in mesh with flywheel ring gear. Chry/Ford use starter switch with a bendix component that throws the starter gear into flywheel ring gear as the starter starts to spin.

Thank you all for your suggestions. I will try all of them. I did get the book
and will proceed to check page 318.
Thanks again
