Location of in hull transducer

Post by jhalb »

I am getting ready to install a sonar transducer in my hull. I have 3 possible locations picked out. 1) next to my depth transducer by my water pump mid ship, 2) under my generator 3) by my stern. The advantage of #1 is if you are in shallow water going slow you have a second before you get to your props. My depth sounder works good but I'm wondering about the sonar when I'm on a plane. #3 is closer to the stern but worried about interference from the genny when running.

I would think forward is better.... it is unlikely to be out of the water on plane. I have forward scanning on my President and it is aft of midships, different hull shape so not so relevant... If your's is forward scanning I doubt you need to worry about another 5/10 feet forward. Mine gives me good warning at low speed, when I would expect to need it.

I would suggest forward of or at least out of line of any appendage to the hull that might cause cavitation bubbles, ergo interfering with clean water operation of the transducer.

additionally if you have a side scan sonar you will most likely need two side scan ducers, and a combiner harness as our boats keel will get in the way. My Hummingbird uses this set up.
