Trans Controls - 1 sticky,1 loosie goosie

Not a major show stopper, but something that bothers me are the trans controls for my F-32.

The port side is a little "stiff" than I prefer, and the starboard side is a bit loose and does not have a very positive neutral feeling. I don't think there is a cable tension issue as there is no slop; just one side is tight and the other is loose.

I am not sure if there is a way to adjust this or if the issue is inherent in the controls, the transmission, or somewhere in the cable (or ALL of the above).

Interesting post....

I had considered that and sprayed some motorcycle clutch cable oil on the top end, but I imagine it didnt make it all the way through the cable run.

It will come out the other end using that process, make sure you use rags there. It makes a big difference...... for me stiff cables became like new.

Did you do it from the bottom end or top end? Also, did you have a similar experience with yours?

Don't know the type of controls you have but it may have the ability to adjust lever effort, and there should be a neutral detent adjustment to get a more positive feedback when shifting into neutral. It's typically a screw that adjusts the position of a spring loaded ball that slides into a detent in the shifting mechanism. The tighter the adjustment, the more positive the detent will feel.

From the top... bridge to lower station. Then lower station to transmission. Mine were very stiff so much so that I sheared threaded end off one and had to buy a new cable.... made sure I lubed them after that. I will repeat should they stiffen up again but seem to be OK still.... 4 yrs later.

Follow up on this....

I made the oiler gizmo as pictured and used my portable battery pump fill it up to 50 PSI. After 3 hours, it did not seem to move. I ran out of time and left it to deal with later.

I was back today after about a week and all the oil was gone! I checked for leaks and I expected it to be running down the length of the cable... Nope. So I check the tranny side where I left a white paper towel and it was stained with red oil :P I hooked everything back up and wow! What a difference.

The loosey-goosey side needed a washer on the inside of the cotter pin.
