I am looking at a 12 meter Convertible with 671TI 450's.

My questions are as follows.

1. This boat has 1820 hours is that too many to consider this boat?
2. This boat has been under cover since new.
3. Engines have documented oil changes every 100 hours. I thought the standard was more often. Anyone know?
4. They are asking $65,900 for this NADA says 45k for low retail and 58 for high. Where would you offer on this boat?
5. We really like the boat my wife is concerned about the ladder to the bridge when we are underway. My thought is we will be using this boat on the Potomac river mostly as a weekend family boat. It can get rough but by rough I mean 5 foot tops. Not much more than that on a bad day. So for this boat if I am correct it is not going to bother it. Is this fair? How is transversing the ladder to the bridge while underway? is it scetchy or not bad?
6. Anything on this boat that you know I should definately check.
7. IF you woudl never consider this boat can you explain why and give any advice you can.
8. How accessible are the engine compartments for doing work. Today I can barely get my foot into the engine room. My Mechanic hates me when I call. My goal is to call him less and get in and do the work myself. I am pretty handy.
9. Can a decent sized Swim platform be added or would it dig in too much when trying to get on plane?

I currently have a 34 foot Rinker Fiesta Vee. We want more boat, Diesel, A separate space for 2 small children (4 and 6), And just more room to relax on the boat when at anchor/transient slip. We rarely go to the boat and sit at our marina unless there is a Marina event.

What do you think on those hours on the boat?

The 671@450-485 hp normally go between 1500-2500 hours between overhauls ,A engine survey is a good idea . make sure you get someone that know detroits and will remove the air box covers to inspect the cylinders rings and pistons . You could be nearing overhaul time or years away depending how its been run and taken care of .

My understanding is they change the oil every 100 hours. Run them at 1900 for cruise max. They are an older couple. They also said they get a survey every 3-4 years so they know what needs to be fixed and take care of it. This year they had the boat pulled and bottom painted and a full detail performed. The boat has absolutely no smell in the cabin. That is good to know about those hours. I friend told me 5000 hours on TI and 10-15000 on Naturals.

A friend of mine got almost 4000 hours on one (485 hp) but he ran them easy , very easy the other engine only went about 2000 before a major failure . A Post I was involved with just had the engines overhauled (inframe) . was just over 1500 hours , this boat was run hard . So it it can vary . I don't think you see many High output Detroit's go over 2500 hours . A natural just keep on going '

A survey will give a better Idea of life left . a 1000 hours can be over 10 years to the average boater .

Great boat engine combo . Of course a survey is a must . A quick test of engine condition is how well it starts and how quick most the smoke stops . (cold )
When I say cold I mean 70 degrees or warmer . Below 50 they start needing block heaters

I will do an engine survey but I am concerned with that many hours the 2k for the engine survey will be money not well spent. As I feel that 2k is about what I should expect out of this. If you disagree I was thinking of offering 40k and hope not to piss them off too much.

older boats don't get the traffic that newer ones get.

In Deltaville Henry Lackey is the guy you want may to use for the engine survey, he knows Detroit's very well and he is local to the area. We had 6 71's in our Egg Harbor years ago and they had 2000+ hours on them and are still running strong!

Thank you I will remember that name. Just found out a buddy of mine in Florida is a Diesel Mechanic and specializes in Detroit Diesels. He said he may be interested in coming up here to take a look. But I may have this guy as a backup.
