On Raycor fuel filter/separators that have the metal screw on bottom section for inboard gassers there is a plug at the bottom. Is it acceptable to replace the plug with a drain valve for ease of draining? Or is a plug and not a valve required?

Did you, ummm, try searching the world wide web first? See ABYC H24.9.3. Says no valves on gas systems.


Of course ABYC is non-regulatory, but if there is a problem related to your installation of a drain in the gas system, your insurance company may have something to say about the matter.

Thanks P dog, no I did not search. I will leave it with a plug. I only use liability insurance so I self insure and will leave plug in!

A valve will eventually leak, just a matter of time, so while it's convenient, it's not a good idea. I've seen some on diesel applications and I'd say most of them were leakers.
