F36 Walk Through Transom

F36 Walk Through Transom
Has anyone made a Walk Through Door on an F36. If so, How drasticly was the aft portion of the boat rebuilt?

Yes, a full walk through from the cockpit to the swim platform. I know its not impossible, but I think there could be alot of stuctural work to do. If its done on land, the boat may need to be held together from each side to keep the hull from splitting. The top rail of the aft portion of the hull appears to be pretty thick and structural. A small hatchway as mentioned in an earlier topic may be the way to go without rebuilding th integrity of the stern. I was considering a steel form laid up between the inner and outer walls of the transom. This may eliminate going below the deck to add stringers.

I guy who would/should know once told me it's ok to cut a transom door if you have a very strong, stable dive platform on the back. Supposedly, a good platform makes up for cutting away a door. Personally, I'd make the door one where you have to step in...at least 6 inches higher than the cockpit deck to leave as much structure as possible.

I agree! Leave the transom alone - its only a 36' boat anyway ...

You asked a question with some good replies and input, based on your question for the particular boat -F36. All gave you ideas on what would work, what may not work and their thoughts based on their knowledge of why, to your question.
Of the 5 posts from you in this subject, you never mentioned why you wanted a transom door.
We are only offering advise and input based on the boat's design and structural integrity and not a needed ammenity.
I applaud you if this modification is based on a handicapped need. However there are some alternatives we can help you come up with, if you like, based on that particular need.

So, there was an actual reason for making a transom door. Well, then it cannot be done. The only reason we do endless revisions and upgrades to our boats is that it totally defies logic. I'm sorry, you'll have to buy another boat.

How about removable sideways steps along the transom. Walk onto the swim board port to stbd, up three short steps, turn left through the aft folding rail, down one or two steps into the cockpit, pull the keeper pins out of the removable hand rail that goes up the left side of the steps and turns 90% and goes into another outer sleeve(socket) mounted on the inner transom wall. if desired, pull the other two pins that hold the steps into place which will leave two more small outer sleeves(sockets) mounted onto the outside of the transom just inside and above the swim board. This is a simple, easy to fabricate alternative, maintaining structural integrity. This is the same step structure that is used on most modern construction job/office trailers. .... just a thought.
