replacing a glass water tank

Post by CaptMike »

Hi all,

I have 10.8 meter trojan with a mid cabin glass water tank. I have spoke about it before on this forum. I think I want to get rid of it and replace it with a standard poly/plastic tank... Is this reasonable? I had to make an access panel on my current one to fix a leak before.

How the 10.8 express working out for you. Why do you want to replace the tank? The current tank is integrated into the hull. You can remove anything and reglass, but I don't see the purpose. The tank you have was designed specifically to fit under your salon sole. You mentioned that you had a leak. Was that in the tank?

Yes, the tank had cracking around the outlet and such that I patched... I had to cut access holes into the tank though to clean it and and repair stuff. The molded tank is great, but I am wondering now that I have access holes if my pressure and plumbing system is not working properly so I just thought of replacing it.

The boat is great... Fixing some pesky system issues like water heater and sealing some leaky spots like zinc annodes and stuff, but otherwise a great boat.

I wonder if someone failed to winterize it properly and that is why it cracked. Its tough to believe that it would just crack. I can't see your access points being an issue with your pressure. The tank needs air in it to prevent back pressure anyway. If you seal the tank, water wouldn't be able to be sucked out. Much like holding your finger on top of a straw full of water. Your tank has a vent attached to prevent this from happening. Have you checked your pump? You might also have an air pocket or air in the lines.

I can't say for sure, but the water tank is integrated between two linear stringers. It may also provide some type of structural integrity into the hull.

On another note, can you forward me your HIN#? I am trying to track down some of the 10.8 expresses. I will probably do a write up on the little know vessel from what I have learned so far.

Thanks.
Todd
