What is everyone using for bottom paint and what prices are you finding. I've used Awlstar from Awl Grip and also Interlux Micron CSC in the past. Any other paints you feel are doing a good job. How many seasons between painting are you getting.

I used W.M. CPP ablative over 2 years ago. It kept the barnicales off but the slime build up was bad. I think I'm gonna try W.M. PCA Ablative with Ingarol for slime buildup this go round. I've heard it works pretty good in the Chesapeake Bay area. WM has it right now for $180 and is offering a $20 mail in rebate.

+1 on the WM ablative. I think the slime on the Chesapeake is going to be bad this year. The water off Solomons is already 58 degrees...as of Sunday

Interlux A.C.T. from Defender marine for $112.00 a gal. Have used this for the past 5 yrs. with great protection from barnacles and slime. I also used WM brand but slime was a issue each year.

Anyone do anything about that 3/4 inch white stripe between the black stripe and bottom paint that is impossible to keep white on Trojans???

Seriously, it is a major pain in the A** to keep white. On my boat, it is so close to the water line - it is impossible to keep white!

I was thinking of painting it - ironically, - white - or gold, or grey - or extending the black stripe down to the bottom paint. If it were black, it would not show the water sludge and grime but then I would not be in keeping with the Trojan tradition.

On my F-30, original bottom color is blue whereas most of you have black.

I thought of painting the bottom black but original advertisements show my bottom as being blue which I have kept.

For this season, I will use a multiple of cleaners and rubbing compounds and wax and many hours to to get it white again - until the end of June when it will look like crap again!!!!

I seriously hate that 3/4 inch white stripe around the bottom of da boat!!!!

But I will share a tip, a bunch of painter workers and a bottle of Johnny Walker Black and seriously you will have to go back the next day to see what color the bottom of your boat is!!!!

Luckily, mine turned out to be blue!!!

Interlux ACT, it's seasonal which means it's less likely to build up, I buy from Boatersland $109 a gallon. Dave I put a good coat of wax on that white part and just use a long boat brush through out the season to scrub the crap off, with wax it should'nt be to hard to come off. Alot of people use different bottom paint colors each year, this way you can see it wear away by the end of the season. If you used blue last year, use black this year this way by the end of this season you should see the blue from the previous year.

how many gallons for a 25 footer? 1? is 3 coats better than 2 or dont push it? starting with fresh canvis

I also have had good luck with Pettit Horizons it is a Ablative paint . I think they do a better job the the hard bottom paints . both types have pros and cons

Prowlersfish Pettit Horizons does not contain any BIOLUX slime fighter like Interlux paint does, just an FYI.

Jeff, I could be wrong but if you're starting with a "fresh canvas" you might want to do a barrier coat first, then 2 coats of bottom paint should do it. I think 1 gallon of bottom paint should give you 2 coats.

Jeff,

If you took all the paint down to the gel-coat, then you need a barrier coat first before applying bottom paint.

As a painter, you know that prep means everything.

You will need two coats of barrier coat epoxy and then at least two coats of bottom paint of your choice. Some people prefer self polishing ablative paints and others go with a harder non ablative paint. In either case you will need to apply enough coats to get to the dry film thickness recommended by the paint manufacturer. usually two sometime three coats.

When applying bottom paint start with a different color for the first coat or two then finish with your final color so when it wears over time, you can see what areas need touch up or if it is time for a total new coat.
