F32 propellors

Post by phasev »

I can't remember the size of the propellers on my F32. I have 318 Chrysler engines and I forget if the props where 16x15's or 15x16's. Can anyone help? :?:

For Chrysler 360s, it is 16x16 cupped... Not 100% sure if it is the same for 318s though.

Probably 16dx15p - as someone else said, they're typically marked on the prop hub, but sometimes its on the end ...

For ref, 17 is the largest dia you can put on an F32.

This is simply not true. My brother has 454's in his 1977 F32. And the props he has on are 21x23 with 1 1/4" shafts. His boat gets up and goes...runs great and has never had any drivetrain, cavitation or steering issues in the past 10 years he's owned it. :)

Based on what I see with my 4 blades they can fit..... only use will tell if the prop wash is too close to bottom. Jamie's buddies experience suggests not.

Hummm ...

Stock strut and shaft only gives you 10.5" of clearance between the shaft C/L and the bottom of the boat, so he is almost touching the bottom of the boat.

10% minimum tip clearance is recommended, which is a 17"dia prop. An 18 is ony 8%, and a 21 is 0%.

So that's why the bottom always has shiny streaks!
The point I was trying to make, was that 17" is not the largest diameter prop you can put on an F32. His struts may have been replaced to accommodate before his purchase. A boat mechanic owned it and used the power train from a diesel conversion of a 42 Jersy SF.

Jamie's brothers boat sure runs sweet . I am running 22 X 22 wheels on my F36 and the tip clearance is under 10% with out issues . Yes its better to have 10-15% but on some boats you can get away with it

Then I'll re-state to cover the rare non-original strut replacement situation:

"The largest dia you SHOULD put on a STOCK F32 is 17", although a maximum of 19 or possibly 20 is possible, but may hit or cause serious cavitation."

and

"The largest diameter you can run on an F32 with new struts depends on what size struts your mechanic replaced them with."

Point is, I'm trying to help the original poster with 318's who probably has original F32 struts.
