Made some LED lights............

Post by Natchamp »

Gents,

Thought I would share my recent project. I wanted some LED spread lights as well as some underwater LED's. I couldn't find anything available for spread lights that are dim-able. So, I researched LED's and decided to design and make my own. Below are some pics. I think they came out pretty cool. They are small at only @ 2.5" in diameter and put out a whomping 1,500 lumins. I like the fact that they are dim-able. I am planning on putting 4 of them as spreaders but after seeing how much light they put out I think that's going to be overkill but that's fine with me! I'm going to mount a couple of green units on my trim tabs as well. cheers.

Below are some pics I took at night. The pics don't do justice but you'll get the idea. The night was pitch black and no flash was used.

The pool is 20'x60' so the shrubbery you see at the back of the pool is @ 65' away.

These palm trees are very tall at @ 60-70'. In the corner of the pic you can see the roof of the 2 story house.

Here I have one just laying in the bottom of the pool. I couldn't get it to lay very well so the aim of the light isn't the best.

Nice work Mark, that is some amazing workmanship.

I replaced the stern light and added an all around light on a small mast on the radar arch this weekend, I also installed rope lighting in the cockpit under the coaming, it looks great but absolutely pales in comparison to your spreader lights!

Very nice work -- please do tell how they work out after you get them installed. A 5-axis mill I presume? What was your source for LEDs? Did you make your own pulse width modulated dimmer or buy one off the shelf?
I needed a less expensive hobby, so I bought a boat!

Thanks guys, I get that question asked a lot (when can I buy one) but unfortunately the numbers don't play out well. The components I used are pretty spendy so there is no way of producing them at an economical price point.

Mark,

Nice job! What part did you make? The housing? Electronics?

Love to have 4 of these for spread and spot lights on the radar arch I'm finishing (2-3 year project) ...

I'll never use anything but LEDs for anything on a boat again.

Can you use some yellow and blues in there to creat a more traditional yellow light color? I have s strip in my cabin with mixed colors that looks like incadescent.
