30' 1976 hull refit to trawler

Post by Captain Ray »

Waukegan Harbor, Lake Michigan - July 2012, initial launch of newly converted 30' 1976 project boat.

Happy to see this website is here!

Why did I refit instead of restore? - I wanted to build a larger boat from plans, but found a beautiful Trojan hull with rotten teak deck, etc. I fell in love with this hull shape, had already purchased design plans for trawler, and modified as needed to to get what it is now. The project turned out great! Will post picture as soon as I figure out the website rules.

Thanks to Bob Cushman for the help with parts and advice over the years!

Thanks to all for the kind comments!

The below links give an idea of the condition at the time I acquired it.

Again, although it was totally rotten from the deck, to the bulkheads, to the engine beds, this hull was in great shape due to Whittaker Corporation's good glass and the great design shape. The hull lines are still inspiring to me!

The engine block in the picture (starboard)was totally ruined - had pistons rusted to the cylinders and was cracked from freeze damage. New long block and a couple of parts from Beacon got the starboard engine restored, I thought. At launch last July I discovered milk shake oil in the crank case, and had to get another long block. The first engine had a freeze crack right above the oil pan, which the less than reputable rebuilder did not catch - present long block was beautiful from delivery. Sure did learn a lot about Chrysler 318 marine engines in the process.

I am really happy that I ran into an old Trojan Vessel! This thing keeps on giving!

prowlerfish,
I am not sure what you are trying to do - if you see other photos on my Flickr account that would be interesting I would be happy to put them up on here. When I posted on this Trojan website these are public domain for viewing. As I look through my pictures, it brings a bunch of interesting thoughts to mind for new threads. Got any suggestions?
