Taller Rudder Stuffing Boxes, F-boat ?

Post by rossjo »

Hauling the boat in December for Bottom Paint, new Thru-Hulls for engine cooling and new Strainers.

Thinking about replacing the Rudder Stuffing Boxes with taller units, where the top is above the water line to eliminate drips here. Mine are so low and near the 4 thru-hull bolts, that it is nearly impossible to get a wench on the lock nuts. to loosen, plus they are in bad shape and impossible to pack any more.

Has anyone done this on their Trojan?

I'm pretty sure you want it to be below the waterline. Water lubricates the bushing and packing. Without it you'll get squeaking and wear.

No, I doubt I could get a wench to work on those either ;)

Finding that many boats have the top of the rudder log above the water to keep water out and allow for packing without hauling the boat.

Many also extend the packing nut up from the floor with a length of rubber tubing and hose clamps, which seems prone to failure at some point, so I'm looking ofr simply longer bronze shaft boxes ...

Anyone else worked on this problem?

What do the Internationals have?

Does anyone happen to know what the dead-rise is on the F32?

Is it 5° or 8° at transom ? I have seen both listed.

Ross it your asking so you can get a stuffing box , Look at where its mounted . If its like a F36 the hull is made its flat and level where the stuffing box is mounted kind of a pocket so it uses a 0 deg stuffing box .

Paul,

I believe you're right. My photos don't show it well enough to tell, so will check it tomorrow in the sunshine.

My diver will be here tomorrow as well, so I'll have him check the outside.

Thanks!
