I agree you wouldnt want to use it on items that take force as the stuff does oozzze out for a while.

trojan used butyl tape everywhere it could. i've used it on several occasions to rebed screws on the bridge railings and around the windows. this stuff rocks. i buy it by the yard at my local rv store as rv's use it in and around window frames etc..... when i rebed the screws, i put it in the hole and around the screw threads. as the screw tightens the tape gradually squeezes around the screw head. i take a bit of butyl tape to attach to the overflow, then use white vinegar on a cloth and quickly swipe it over the rebedded screw head. the vinegar cleans it right off and is not toxic. the leak has not come back. butyl tape is the best invention made!! i'm actually thinking of using the single sided butyl tape in areas of the forward windshield where some of the original gaskets have dropped out.

Just an FYI for everyone. I just removed my entire bowrail and found Butyl tape was used to seal it. I am almost sure it had never been rebedded so I think it was done at the factory. Only had one small leak, not bad considering how many penetrations there were. The leak was on a leg down from the gas fill. I read butyl tape doesnt hold up well to fuel. I'm thinking the previous owner (not me of course!) spilled alittle fuel over the years and that lead to a leak? everything else was adheared tight and still pliable.

Todd I would definatly use it on the windshield I used silicone and it was a disaster, I had that crap everywhere during the process.

My 78 F-32 came from the plant with Butyl tape on all the stantions, windows, and deck hardware. I've had it over 30 years and it's still sealed. Just keep all the fasteners tight and if you have to do any removal just clean and reseal. There are a few modern sealers in todays market that are terrific and 3-M makes some of them. My question is how effective will THEY be in 35 years. At least we know how the Butyl holds up.
