F28 packing glands and coupler pulling

In my f28 rehab I just finished taking apart the propeller shaft upper end and have a couple of tips and comments.

The puller I used is a KD #2291 and used two 3/8 bolts and washers through the coupler. (note use grade 8 hardware as non grade 8 stripped the threads on first try. Basically I would categorize removal of the shaft coupler not too hard given no engine hanging over the V drive. Although I did use cheater bars to apply adequate force as well as PB Blaster.

Looking down under the f28s 318s and V drives I wondered how anyone would repack the glands. Well once apart I can see that some had difficulty before, one gland only had two layers of packing and they drilled and used a set screw to hold the packing nut which you can see sticking out the side. Luckily vice grips grabbed the thing and extracted. The jam nut was stripped. I will be replacing with dripless types as maintenance is nill if done right.

The main point of this note is to point people to a puller that indeed does work and is not very expensive.

Does not appear any pitting or gaulding. Have not pulled shafts yet I have to take off zinks first. The seAl area looked good.

Something of interest and I do not know why other than something electrical. The set screws were safety wired, which I can understand however they were from, I think, the factory and the wire was copper. Copper is pretty soft, any one want to opine as to why copper and not traditional safety wire as used elsewhere?
