CAN I USE HIGH TEST GAS

Post by Cindy »

Hi Folks... First time posting for me but am REALLY worried about my 76 Trojan tricabin with 440 Chrysler engines.. I boat out of Georgian Bay,Ontario Canada. This year we are being forced to use ethanol fuel in our gas. I have educated myself very well so understand the good and bad about it... Having said that...I do NOT want to use it.. Our high octane premium fuel does NOT contain ethanol but I am worried that I might be causing myself more problems using high octane gas than ethanol regular. My question.. Am I totally safe using the high grade fuel in my 76 Trojan. Any help would be great... Thanks Cindy

Cindy,
I don't believe using high octane fuel will hurt your engines. using low octane fuel in a high performance engine will cause knocking. I think the main damage will be to your wallet. They switched all our fuel to ethanol 2 yrs ago. It was a pain at first but after many fuel filters and a couple of fill ups everything seemed to work out. My biggest concern is fuel storage over the winter. I was told to use Startron fuel treatment by Starbrite. and stabil fuel treatment.

Good Luck

Hi test is totally safe in engines designed for regular. Think about it this way: regular gasoline is more explosive than hi test. Hi test has additives that make it slightly less combustible. "Premium" gasoline is a fantastic marketing gimmick. Only engines designed for premium require it--they advance their ignition more than engines designed for regular gas, so if regular gas were used, it would explode too early (predetonate) and knock. Long winded way of saying fill 'er up with premium.

BTW: ethanol may be inevitable for you. Consider saving a little money and make the switch now. It'll clean your fuel system really well! Then use hi test for winter storage.

It won't hurt a thing . but I am sure ethanol with be in the hi test soon .
Now to steal a quote here ethanol in gasoline is a "fantastic marketing gimmick" they sold both our countrys on it . ( it wastes more fuel to make then it saves )
