Hi.Im new to the world of Trojan.Im purchasing a 37 foot 1985 11meter in the San Diego area.I live in the Napa area.Im thinking about sailing her up the coast.Its about 300 miles.I plan to liveaboard.Any suggestions.

Welcome !
make sure you get a survey done . is it gas or diesel ? flybrige or express or aft cabin ? make sure you have the engines checked before your run up the coast . take spare fuel filters ( make sure they include gaskits/seals) and know how to change them this is a must as boat that have been for sale often sit for a while and than not good for the fuel . make sure the bottom is clean also . othe spares good to have to have implers oil coolant may be belts .

good luck the 11 meters are great boats no matter what style !

Before you make you trip north, run the boat locally. Make sure the hoses are in good shape. Check for any signs of cracking or dry rotting. Pay particular attention to the exhaust hoses. If they fail you won’t be able to operate the engines without dumping water into the bilge. The exhaust manifolds are also a source of failure. Salt water is tough on them. They can look perfect on the outside, but can rust internally. The problem will not be apparent when running, but you can get water in the block after the engine is shut down. Check for water in the oil before starting the engines after running the boat.

As mentioned in the earlier post, have spare fuel filters. Don’t forget the tools to work on the boat in case you need to make energy repairs.

Lance, Are you buying an express or convertible? I'm looking at used boats, and so far a 1985 11 meter express is at the top of the list. from my research they were very well built both the convertible and express models. You said you ARE buying so the deal is in process. Did you have a survey done? If so how'd it look? Congrats and good luck with your new ride

Thanks for all great advice.I still have to have the survey done.Its an express,gas powered with a 400 gas tank.Not sure how far I can go on a tank full yet.The Crusader 454 engines look and sound solid.

Im on the way up in Oceanside.. Also have an 11Meter (86) I think I've fixed just about everything on that model. PM any questions

Tanks size should be 350G. @ 10 knots you can go a long way but it's many factors..wind current etc..

Take everyones advise, carry a spare everything ! dist cap, rotor etc... & do some port hopping along the way. (short trips) Check Marinetraffic.com for tankers etc..

Change the raw water impellers now. Genset too!

Ditto for the pencil zincs.

If there is no accurate maintenance log, better remove and check the risers and elbows.

belts & hoses should be replaced. Then carry the old ones which you now know will fit as spares.

Also who knows how old the fuel pumps are.

With the realities of ethanol, these should be replaced now as well.

I hve also had (when I had the 454's ) an ignition coil fail.

Certain components will give no warning. KEEP SPARES & TOOLS ON BOARD.

Most marine gas engines do not wear out.

They don't age gracefully.

They don't simply die of old age, most of thenm are MURDERED!

Maintenance becomes lax, a component fails and kills the engine.

Literally.

Expensively.

and always at an inopportune time.

Best of luck with the 11 meter, she's a great boat!

11m 1985

We have just taken delivery of an 11m Trojan, 1985. So far, love it have looked through alot of the posts but am unable to find a power vent ram...???for the front window....the old one has been removed and am at a loss as to what to look for.......Also would like to see any pictures of updates done to the boat......thanks,
