How is everyone doing, I have been off the forum for a wile, been tied up buildidng an addition on the house to have a fireplace in. Some of you that live down south will not appreciate the fire place but up here in the north east boating is over and the freezing is underway.
There seems to be a bunch of new names of members on the forum, I say welcome aboard. I will try to get on more often and help out, well at least get my Â½ cent in..

welcome back.... how phil and i wish this 1926 ''fixer upper'' had a fireplace..... the first thing we would have done is put in a wood stove.
we were going to add one, but the walls are 18inches thick!! starting from the outside....stucco,brick,masonry block,lathewire,furringstrips,1.5" of horse hair infused concrete, then a quarter inch of plaster...... and yeah, no insulation. we are ''planning" on putting up insulated exterior siding to give us some "R" value to the walls. sometimes i think it would have been easier and less expensive to bulldoze the damm thing and put up a double wide!!
anyone interested in a siding install party?

Aaronbacknek, believe it or not, you do have some r value in that wall configuration the only problem is that once that wall get cold, it cost you a fortune in heat to warm it back up.

Guglielmo6160 , If you were to come up the Hudson river, just north of Albany is the federal lock #1. Just a few miles north of that is Waterford NY. At that point if you nav east around 2oo yards you come upon lock #2 this is the first lock on the Eire canal sys. If you nav north on the Hudson another three miles or so you come upon lock #1 on the Champlain canal sys. 300 yards past that lock is where I am at Lock one Marina.

I always wonder how we come up with these handles, I am a plain Jane, just my name and year I was born.

rick, tell me about it.... the computer is located in a corner of the living room that faces south west and when it gets cold soaked, it STAYS THAT WAY. it's like refrigerator. it does stay cool though until about mid july then it heats up and stays hot. phil and i installed two E-HEAT panels in the living room and believe it or not, they work wonders!! i had a heating system like this in my flat when i lived in london. they have been around for years in europe but not until about 4 years ago did they start selling well in the usa. we were actually thinking of buying several E-HEATS for the boat, but, because they are made of a ceramic material, i nixed the idea because i am not sure they would last with the flexing of the bulkheads. it would be an awesome idea to try though. i am looking forward to putting up insulated siding though.... most of the houses in our area are going to that rather than redo the stucco... MAJOR BUCKS and it looks really nice. just another l o n g t e r m plan i guess.

Aaron, not sure what E-Heat is but I think you gave me an Idea as to what it is. Could you not install that heater on the bulkhead in such a way it would float like one of the gimble lamps, this way the heater would not flex and crack the ceramic.
London, oh how I would love to spend some time there.

rick, (and any one else that is interested) the website is.... http://www.eheat.com they are really amazing and i cannot tell you how much of a difference those two panels made in the living room. we also installed one long panel in the kitchen two years ago because there was not a heat source in there. the original kitchen used a wood burning cook stove. the eheat panel mounts on brackets that are about an inch from the wall/bulkhead to create natural convective flow. i guess it would work but the only problem is finding a bulkhead that does not have any obstructions to give the convection a free flow.

as for living in london (thanks mom, thanks dad) i did it during my junior year in college back in the early 1980's and it was an amazing experience. the fact that i could get any where, any time using the underground and not having a car was the best. i did rent a car though just to see what it was like driving ''on the wrong side of the road''. talk about a pucker factor!!! if you think drivers in the usa are insane, brother you aint seen any thing until you are on the A34 or the M25 (like the dc/beltway only faster). but the all time worst experience was driving in downtown paris and in athens greece...... everyman for himself.
but, it was an experience and to be honest, fun. what can i say, i was young and stupid at the time.
