chrysler 280 on 36 tri cabin
silly question, but i'm not a mechanical type at all, and am curious...
i'm thinking of buying a 36 tri. the ad says it has twin chrysler 280s, with 280 horsepower.
is that correct? if not, does anyone know what the hp of these engines are? i've looked for a hour on the net, and can't find poo.
thanks!

I'll bet they they should be more correctly called Mercruiser 280's. Take a look at the name plate on your engines & see what it says for Model # & Serial #. Mercruiser takes various car manufacturer engines, 'marine-izes' them, and calls them by their horsepower rating. I've got a tri-cabin with Mercruiser 255's, which are basically marine-ized GM 5.7L, or 350ci truck engines rated @ 255 HP each.
I was always a fan of the Chrysler 318's & 383's, so, if your engines have been taken care of, you've got some sweet engines there.

Engines
My Chrysler 250's are actually 360 cu.in. displacement. Straight interpolation would give you about 380 cu. in. displacement for a 280 hp engine.
Boat Name: A TAD TOO MUCH
Model: 1978 F-32 Sedan Cruiser
Engines: Twin Chry 360's 666 hrs original engines
2013 Mercury 300 Ocean Runner 9.9hp Merc 4 stroke

Re: chrysler 280 on 36 tri cabin
I have a 1976 Trojan F36 tri deck with twin Chrysler marine 280 and the Model number on the engines are #400BWL10/597. The engines were kept very well however I am into my 1st impeller change which is a Sherwood by the way. I am on Lake Simcoe. Good luck
