FYI a friend of mine replaced his with some white auto trim to finish/protect the joint. It looks quite nice and he does not seem to miss any lost functionality that the drip rail may have offered.

j channel drip rail

Post by aaronbocknek »

okay, next question, how does one get the ''j channel'' to bend around the round edges of the deck without crushing it in the middle?
just thought i would ask that one.

Attach straight length and then roll rail around the corners (using wood block) and attach those, the curve is quite shallow. QED

Aaron, ready123 instructions are the correct way to install the drip rail. Aluminum is a soft metal and will bend around the corners without kinking. Plan how the drip rail will lay out. You may want to start in the front center of the bridge.

Start on the straight portion of the edge of the flybridge, at least far enough away from the beginning or end of the curve, to get 2 screws in the drip rail before the curve starts or ends. Start bending the drip rail around the curve. It will work best if you have someone help you with the bend. As one person bends the drip rail around the curve, the other person, using a block of wood and a hammer, tap the aluminum as it is being bent around the curve. Tap on the flat part of the trim, rather then the J part of the drip rail. Tapping the J could crush it. Work the block right where the drip rail hits the curve and slightly in front of where the metal hits the curve. Don’t try to make the bend quickly. Use many taps to form the bend. As soon as the bend is far enough around the curve, screw it in place and keep working the drip rail until it has completely rounded the corner. If you are going to caulk under drip rail, mount it first. Then remove it, run a bead of caulk, and then resecure the drip rail. Clean the excess caulk before starting the next piece. Cut the lengths of drip rail so you always start and finish the bends before and after the curves.
