1989 mid cabin anchor chain

we have a winch at the bow designed for line not chain
what is the best way to secure the anchor chain when not in use?

I used to wrap mine around the windlass . I only used the chain for over night . I have since gone to a rope/chain one

We use one of these Mantus chain hooks, and it is awesome.

We use a spring clip that goes from the shackle on the line to the shackle on the anchor, leaving a big loop of chain. The chain falls through a hole in the bow pulpit and rests on the deck. This will only work with a relatively short piece of chain and also requires somebody to be on the bow to deploy and stow the anchor. That person has to be strong enough to manually haul the anchor, so with our 45lb anchor, I end up doing it.

to be clear I'm only looking for a way to secure the anchor while underway
seems as if there are many ways to grab the chain with a line (mantus chain hook for one)
does anyone have a good way to keep tension on the line which in turn would keep tension on the
chain while underway?
I could wrap the line around the windlass and then tie it off
but I'm thinking something like a bungee cord

also, was the boat originally equipped with a system that dealt with this ? or was it always left up
to the individual owners?

The windlass would be holding the line so no need to wrap the line around it , then use one of the methods above to secure the anchor and chain .
or something like this below bungee cords don't last and are not very strong . You never did say how much chain ? I just just use a short line with a hook my self .

I guess I should have clarified, that the chain hook is cleated off, then I back a bit of tension off the windlass, so that the hook and line are holding the weight of the anchor. The windlass should never be used or trusted to hold the tension of an anchor underway or at anchor. We carry 100 feet of chain and 200 feet of rope, so when we are anchored we either use a snubber, the chain hook to the cleat, or if into the rope, the anchor rope to the cleat.
