89 mid cabin generator

the boat has an Onan 4.0 generator
we bought the boat 4 months ago
the generator started up and ran fine repeatedly
I don't think this has anything to do with the current problem but just to be thorough
we changed the batteries, there were five, we set it up with three
one for the starboard engine and the genset, one for the port engine, and one for the house
seemingly related in time the generator stop working
it turns over but will not start
I checked and there is fuel getting to the carbuerator
also it will run for a few seconds on stater fluid but that's it

any thoughts?

If it runs on starting fluid and is getting fuel to the carb , likely trash or water in the carb or stuck float / needle and seat .
