Spring Project 154: Carburetor Upgrade
Ok smart friends....
First, no opinions are needed about Edelbrock 1409's vs Rochester Quadrajets.
I'm swapping to the Edelbrocks. I have all of the parts except the fittings for the A1 fuel line. That's where I could use some help.
The steel line gets tossed from the fuel pump to the carb. A new A1 coast guard approved line gets used. What fitting do I need from the pump? I've reviewed the post on marinengine.com but it isnt clear.
Can anyone tell me the type of fitting? is it a 3/8 barbed? I'm confused....I know the one going INTO the carb is a 5/8 - 20 by 3/8 barbed.

On second thought, the carb fuel inlet is the connection I am unsure of.

This thread describes a four inch 5/8 x 20 flared fitting...what the heck is that?

Re: Spring Project 154: Carburetor Upgrade
I've been at every auto parts store that's still turns out, its just 3/8 inverted flare. I had read that A1 rubber hose was approved for marine use, but finding a 3/8 inverted flare to barbed proved to be harder than I thought. Long story short, I made my own lines temporarily and I will be looking for a permanent solution with a new fuel filter setup.

I was thinking pre-made steel brake line with the fittings and flares all set up.
just bend and install with adapter if needed

Re: Spring Project 154: Carburetor Upgrade
An issue I had was getting to match the angle of the inverted flare fittings, especially at the fuel pump....if you get it wrong it will leak....eventually I just used the old line that had the right angles , cut it and put the rubber marine fuel hose between with the inline filter in that section. The inline filter is ok because of the barbed fittings and the connection to the old ss line is acceptable so long as you flare the ends that will go inside the rubber hose. There is actually a description of how to do it in the regs.

Did the carb swap 5 years ago. Used sdparts.com for the eldelbrock 1409 carbs and fittings. They had a great selection of fittings for the elderbrock carbs. Worth a look. Make sure that the correct carb base gasket matches up with the bottom of the carb. Had a mechanic use the wrong gasket so the secondary' throttle blades wouldn't open.

Re: Spring Project 154: Carburetor Upgrade
Thank you for all the advice. For some reason I stopped getting notification of replies so I missed a few of these.
I ended up flaring the existing lines and adding a section of A1 hose with a filter. I dont love this setup and will be changing it. So far, the carbs run great. Just need to tune them a bit...little rich right now.

For reference, there are a number of flaring standards. Many flares are at 45 degrees, but some fuel lines are AN flares at 37 degrees. If you have AN fittings, check hot rod suppliers like Summit and JEGS. And then there are the less common ones...
