10 meter express auto pilot

Post by swimmer »

I want to install an auto pilot on my 1985 10 meter express. This is part of my re-do project. Does anyone know what the RAM is for a 10 meter and if it has a balanced or unbalance system. I do know that it is hypnautic, hydraulic steering. (My boats in storage for the winter so I can't get to it). If anyone has any comments or suggestiions I would appreciate it.

Also I admit I went over the top and purchased a Lowrance open array radar and chart plotter that is Nmea 2000. (I couldn't pass up the price)Question: Are all auto pilots compatiable with this set-up and can everything talk to each other or am I limted in my choices. Again any input is appreciated.

Was your Lowrance package a better deal than this?

http://www.boatfix.com/shop/scripts/pro ... duct=45673

They had the 10" display for around 1900.00 but they sold out.
I am sure it's compatible with a new autopilot, just not that smart to tell you how to go about it.

Good luck with your project.

I installed the Raymarine auto pilot on my 1983 10 Meter in 2004.

It's the unit with the fluxgate compass. It was purchased as a complete "kit" and was a rather simple installation.

I later added the Raymarine C series multifunction plotter and radar.

There were some issues with those but all has since been resolved.

MAKE SURE YOU USE MARINE GRADE ELECTRIC CABLE OF MORE THAN ADEQUATE GUAGE !!!!!!!

If you need the model numbers I can get those tomorrow.

No, it is/was a good deal though...

I have Raymarine open array radar and Garmin 2010 Chart plotter. I also have back-up GPS as well.

I put the Simrad auto pilot on mine (rudded indicator, fluxgate compass, computer, hydralic pump, and duel control heads) Before you start the instalation, plan everything out. Avoid a spider web of wires Carefully rought them and strap all wires. Neatness counts. Try to do it like the factory would. It takes a bit more wire, but it's the right way.

duplex and 4 wire looms are available in a variety of guages at marine stores.

Makes everything easier to install and if you tag them, easier to troubleshoot later.

Autopilot answer

Post by swimmer »

I found the answer to my auto pilot install question. I have a 1985 10 meter express, a fishing boat not a midcabin. It has hypnuatic hydraulic steering---its a balanced system (not unbalanced) it has a 950 psi setting, the piston is 9 cubic inchs by 1 1/4 and 2.75 cul per revolution.

I am not pushing one manufacturer over another but for me right now I'm leaning toward the new Garmin GHP-10 because of it value and options.
This NEMA 2000 business is crazy, both the Lowrance radar and the Garmin are NEMA 2000 but I'm getting mixed responses. Some say they are a match and can talk to each other while others say I'll be limited in what I can do. ---Go figure. But at least I got the main issue solved and will proceed with my boat Re-Do.

Strippermann2, thanks for the website info. I'll keep it for reference. I got my Lowrance open array radar and 9300 C GPS and chartplotter off of e-bay for less then the price listed on your website.
