teleflex leak??? DQ #2

Post by foofer b »

The fluid in my steering unit keeps disappearing. I say disappear, because I can find no evidence of a leak. Am I missing some thing or could there have been air in the lines?? Any thoughts, comments, wisecracks?

On the top of the Teleflex steering head is the filler opening. It should have a thumb screw in it. Teleflex has a filler tube that screws in the filler hole and the other end screws on the bottle of steering fluid. With the tube installed and holding the bottle of steering fluid upside down; turn your steering wheel 20 times back and forth from lock to lock. This will purge any air out of the system. If you loose fluid after that you have a leak. You will have steering fluid somewhere in the boat. It could be leaking at a fitting, the cylinder, the steering head, or at the auto pilot pump, that is if you have auto pilot. If you are loosing fluid it’s got to be going somewhere.

I just had same thing. I have a pressurized system so air would also be gone, but could never find any fluid. Ended up finding out pressure relief valve was leaking. just replaced that, but have to install still to see if it solves problem.

thank you fr all the input. I am inclined to agree, the fluid has to be going somewhere. Will investigate more closely when rotater cuff heals. Roy

Why wait? You've got a good excuse. Send the misses in to look for the leak.

Well that doesn't sound half bad. Spent every other week on her for 3 months this fall over in Fort Walton Beach tied up to my dad's dock. Unfortunately, the significant other had to work so she couldn't come!! Had a blast diving, fishing cruising and sleeping late!!!
