Advice on about to buy a "late 70's" 26 footer

Post by Wesfromhawaii »

I live in Hawaii, where boats are naturally priced higher..I cam across a 26 foot Trojan with a 350 engine and the owner says all it needs is cleaned..the pics look awesome. Hes asking 12,000...is this a good deal? Taken as face value, there is nothng wrong with the boat, just needs cleaned..its sat for a year.

Thanks

Edit: engine has less than 100 hours on it.

I would link the pics but I dont have a host website

this is what the add says
Nice 26 ft Trogan, flybridge dual controls. 350 Chevey gas engine and low hours less than 100! Nicely refurbished cabin sleeps 4. Table, dining and cooking galley and head. Trailer. Great fun for families, fishing, camping. Asking $12,000

No clue- not enough info.

If you're really serious about possibly purchasing the boat, go look at it, put a deposit down and sea trial it. If you like it...

Then hire a competent SURVEYOR!!!!!

Upload the pictures to your computer, then go to a hosting site like http://www.photobucket.com and upload them there and post them here.

Good luck, keep us posted.

Scroll down to "Marine Survey! Why get one?" (towards the bottom of page 1)

I posted this so anyone not familiar with a marine survey, can get an idea of what a marine survey covers. It's a long read, but a good survey is well worth the cost.

absolutely have the boat surveyed [it's like an expert mechanic looking over a used car]...BTW, the economy sucks...at least on the mainland...,should be able to use as bargining chip...who the heck wants to buy a boat if they're not sure of being employed next week?

Thanks for theput so far. I had previously owned a 24 ft chapparel stryker, which I took out regularly about 10 miles off shore...had a blast..i had bought it for 2500, it needed a motor. I put another..Ide say about 8 grand into with motor/labor..had a shop do it. I sold it for 15K.

I got hooked on being out on the ocean..here in Hawaii..theres nothing that compares...ok maybe the Bahamas or something!

Dolphins jumping in your wake, whales crashing not far from your boat.

Anyhow, Im not really blind going into this boat as i was with the last...I was just lucky to get it sold before I deployed to Iraq.

I am blind however on the make of the boat..its performace history and the likes.

I have read up a little so far on the Trojan..seems to be a solid boat..and used to make boats for the Navy.

I think it smart to have someone look at it with me before I make my final choice on wether to buy it or not.

It just seems to me that if its in the shape the guy says its in and only needs a scrubbing...12k is pretty cheap.

I don't know how much more boats sell for in Hawaii, but $12,000 sounds high. It's a buyers market. Check what 12k will buy in other brands and then compare them to the Trojan. If it still looks like a good buy offer less and see what happens. You can always up the offer if he says no.

That looks like a 25 footer, not the F26 (which is in my picture). The tower and hard top have been add-ons. The Trojans came with stock Mercs or Chryslers, and later the 26 had a dual engine option (Volvo I think). What year? $12K may be high, but in HI if there is "location inflation" it may be fair IF the boat proves out in a survey. New engine may be great, but remember it's connected to the drivetrain, etc. Again - if you like it get it surveyed by a pro. I'm sure there are marine surveyors in HI - since it's surrounded by water and there are a LOT of boats there.

I agree with Randy, that definitely looks like a 25' model. The F-26 has a 10' 2" Beam and a raised sheer line. The hard top and bridge tower look like they are aftermarket. I would definitely get it surveyed, you probably won't be able to insure it without the survey due to its age. It is a nice looking boat, good luck!!
