F-26 Screens and Glass

Post by bthomas70 »

I just purchased a 1978 F-26 Flybridge. Overall it's in nice shape, but the cabin screens need replaced. Does anyone know how these are removed? Also, the rear piece of glass on the port cockpit window is cracked. I could use some advice on its removal too.

Thanks,

Brent

Cockpit Glass

Post by Paul »

Hi Brent,

To remove the cockpit glass, you have to slip it out of the "H" shaped plastic slide that caps it at the top & bottom. To do this, try slipping a butter knife between the glass and the plastic (without twisting it) and work your way along from one end to the other while spraying a dish soap and water solution into the gap. Do top and bottom on both sides of the glass. Then holding the plastic still, with a drift or wood dowel, push the glass out of it.

The problem with doing this job is that if the plastic is old, it tends to be brittle and will crack easily. I replaced all of my cockpit side glass and plastic track a few years ago. I ordered the plastic from Marine Tech Sales and Service but I'm not sure that this stuff is still available.

Hope this helps.

Replace the sliding plastic while you have everything apart-I believe the screens are just regular fiberglass screening that is put in with splines-you can get the screen, spline and splining tool at a home center. If you have the tools to fabricate the new plastic sliders youself-do it. If not a place the fabricates plastic can do it. You can either use acrylic or polycarbonate sheet to make the sliders. The polycarbonate is much better-spend a little extra money and go that way. Also vaious degrees of "smoked" are available-so you can dress it up a little bit-good luck.
