water heater

I have a Sea ward,, water heater,, it seems to heating the water to a point where it almost boils , and then of course the pressure relief vlave dumps the water,
anybody see this?? Im guessing the t stadt is not doing its thing,
.just wondering if anybody was faced with this repair, and is it worth looking into , or just replacing the heater

Yes it is a bad t-stat, and yes you can replace it. T-stats are about $40.00 and water heaters are $500.00. T-stat should be held by (2) clips inside of panel, pull out and try your local hardware store for part. Don't forget to set temp. after changing.

The age and condition of the hot water heater should be considered before thinking of repairing the unit. If the heater is in good condition, other then the defective thermostat, you should try to locate the part needed to repair it. Once located, you should compare the cost of the part with the cost of a new unit and make your decision. If the part is reasonable, repairing the heater should be considered.

Was thinking of replacing my hot water tank---Have seen at West Marine tank less ones for boats---has anybody used them ? Any thoughts?

yes I was looking at those to, but the ones I saw were propane,,
so thats not a good thing

they have propane water heaters at west marine? i have all the stuff to convert my boat to propane but i wasnt going to use the hotwater heater...i would like to see what the difference is if any...

A friend put one on his boat last year, and it was a disaster. He wound up taking it out and going back to a tank water heater.

The tankless heater didn't heat the water enough. At full flow it only raised the temperature of the water 17 degrees. (20 amp model) Taking a shower with only hot water was still too cold. He was told that if he put a valve in to restrict the output of the heater, the water would get hotter, but the flow was so slow the shower was almost unusable.

Donâ€™t go tankless.

found my problem, it was of course the t stadt, replaced it and all is working again, pretty easy fix and cheap, 14 bucks

Last year I replaced the original Dayton water heater with one from Defender. Cost $350. It's an 11 gallon model and I had to remove the exhaust manifold to get the old out and new one in. Tankless electric models don't have enough guts to heat the water in my opinion. Had the same t-stat problem on the old one, but after 31 years the original was whupped, even though it still functioned. Lotsa hot water now - $350. Peace of mind - priceless.
