Hear hear - have have 1 diesel and 3 gas boats. Both Cummins in my F32 fie every time and run reliably as long as the bsatteries are charged enough to turn them over. I was commenting the other day (after rebuilding the Quadrajet on my 26' Chapparal,setting the timing and wondering what Ethanol will do to me on my next trip offshore) how great diesels are.
I grew up on gas, but love diesels now ... I wouldn't trade my Navistar 7.3L powered Ford Excursion ... had a mason here for a week who has a new V10 dually, and he said it was weak ... going back to diesel ...
Sorry to steal this thread ... I still have 2 OB's and an I/O with gas ...

Our company (mother-in-law, sister-in-law, niece) went home, so yesterday evening, with some dread, I did a compression check. Yup, the compressions are still low; in fact 5+ lbs lower than before. So, the Marvel Mystery Oil/Sea Foam route ruled out sticking rings. Will now move on to a leak down test, but will wait until after the 4th holiday.
1) the block (rings, pistons, cylinders)
2) the head (valves, etc)
3) head gasket
Might not be a bad idea to pull the whole engineand do the whole thing and be DONE with it.
Of course that's what I was planning to do with the 454's and look where I ended up.....

You should be able to locate the blow by if its a head gasket ... either:
> externally (feel around the edges of the head),
> in the water jacket (see if it blows pressure with the cooling system cap off the cooling system if its FWC'd when you start it cold) or
> internally - is there a lot of pressure blowing oil mist when you remove the oil cap when its running? Be careful on the oil cap - you don't want a lot of oil mist blown into your bilge.
Is the engine burning a lot of oil? Smoking black (shot rings)? Smoking white (head gasket leak to water jacket)?

I'm not seeing either black or white smoke. There is a lot of black soot on the inside of the flame arrester. That could be an indication of a leaking head gasket.

Mine is a 2000 model and have had great service out of the engine...I have put 3 transmissions in it(automatic) since I;ve had it brand new...these long mountain grades in WV pulling a large refridgerated trailer has been tough on the trannys.
Wow - the Ford trannie is the best trannie offered on any of the diesels - and can easily handle the 100-150HP boosts. The Duramax has the weakest. I guess any transmission will wear out if you pull a lot in the mountains. Did you upgrade when you replaced it last?
David - sorry to steal your thread ... I don't think the soot is conclusive. No white or black smoke tells you what ISN'T the problem. The leak-down test is next ...

I haven't given up on the engine-just have to put fooling with it on the back burner for now. One daughter getting married Aug. 8th. Another daughter 2 cm dialated & going into labor soon-I'm coaching her through it. I'm getting ready to teach a Search and Rescue course in August. Also, wife laid off, so money is tight right now. Want to hop on doing the leak down check. but realistically, I don't see proceeding until September.
