Hynautic Steering Rebuild\Reseal

Post by gardnersf »

Last night my steering controls started leaking oil from around the wheel. I'm going down now to check it out further but research leads me to believe a seal failed on the main shaft. The seal kits are readily availible on BoatFix but I was wondering how hard of a job it is. Has anyone rebuilt or resealed their steering system?

System is a Hynautic H50 helm controller. The manual hydraulic pump is basically bulit into the wheel mechanism.

I can get it rebuilt for about $200 but I would rather save the money and time if I can do it myself. The seal kits are about $30

Scott,

I cannot confirm this to be true, but I was tod that Hynautic was RIP.

In the middle of my refit the helm began to leak, fluid running down the fiberglass.

After discussing the cots to rebuild both hydraulic units as the seals in both were the same age, I decided for the DIFFERENCE in cost toreplave the helm and ram with new SEASTAR units and eliminate that air pressure system.

The only significant modificaion was the elimination of that third hydraulic line and we had to take a disc grinder and take off some of the "meat" on the back side of th wheel to get a nice fit and keep the wheel close to the helm.

Just my own experiece. I don't recall the cost.

Scott,
I rebuilt the same helm for my flats boat last year after it took a dump. Although no longer made, Hynautic Canada tech support was helpful in advise and PDF diagrams (Hynautic Canada 604 270 6899-Mark). The kit was easy to install, just several O-rings and gasket(s?). I dont remember the details, but its straight forward dissassembly and reassembly.

Thanks for the replies. I have the seal kit coming and will give it a shot. This is the first leakage I am getting and up until now my system held pressure well. One of my dockmates with similar steering said that the helm seals usually go fomr the torque of people hanging\leaning on the wheel over time.

I don't lean on the wheel generally but I do stand to drive and a sharp wave can casue you to grab it to catch your balance.

I'll see how it goes.

Ok got the kit and did the rebuild as you said, pretty straight forward. I did find that I needed to put the quad seal on first before the wiper. Then I put the wiper on from the outside of the casing. It was the only way I coudl get ti in the right place.
