Was it from the short period that Betram owned Trojan prior to going to Carver. As Betrams still exist it is smart marketing...prowlersfish wrote:Why do they say Built By bertram When they are not ?

some trojan history...
TROJAN manufacturer
Description
Trojan Yachts was founded in 1949 when Jim McQueen and Harper Hull purchased Cottrell-Spoore Boat Works, a small Troy, NY, builder of wooden racing boats and runabouts. They moved the operation to Lancaster, PA, where they had access to a local Amish workforce. By 1951 the company was producing some 20 boats a week, but it was after the Korean War that Trojan really took off. The famous Trojan Sea Breeze was introduced in 1954 and generated 800 orders. In the early 1960s the 31-foot Sea Voyager came out; 10,000 of these wooden family cruisers were produced over the next decade. In 1966 Trojan acquired the Shepherd Boat Co., a Canadian builder of wooden motor yachts to 50 feet. By the late 1960s, Trojan was one of the top three inboard boatbuilders in the world. The Whittaker Corp. (which then also owned Bertram Yachts) purchased Trojan in 1969. Trojan went on to introduce a succession of popular fiberglass models over the next two decades including their revolutionary International Series which made its debut in 1981. The boating recession of the early 1990s—together with the short-lived 10 percent luxury tax—resulted in Trojan’s demise in 1992. The assets were sold to Carver Boats in 1993.

from the Trojan Wars article on my Trojan International website
http://sites.google.com/site/trojaninternational/Home
A succession of new owners arrived and departed as if through a revolving door, each with a solution of how to become viable. After Whittaker came Invest Corp., followed by Bertram, who launched the Bertram Trojan International series in the late 1980s. Next came Genmar Holdings, Inc., who paired the Trojan name with Carver, one of Genmar's many boat-producing companies. In 1992, Genmar closed the Lancaster plant and moved the production line to Wisconsin.

'Twas I that said that...k9th wrote:Aaron - are you saying Carver is out of business? I hadn't heard that.
Genmar, with approximately 1,500 employees and five manufacturing centers, is the builder of 15 premier brands of recreational boats which include, Carver®, Champion®, FinCraft®, Four Winns®, Glastron®, Hydra-Sports®, Larson®, Marquis®, Ranger®, Scarab®, Seaswirl®, Stratos®, Triumph®, Wellcraft®, and Windsor Craft®. Genmar boats are sold worldwide through its approximately 1,100 dealers.
Back in June they went chap 11...
Brunswick is dropping Maxum also.
Change has just begun... Trojan will not be the only 'dead' boat company in the next year.

Sorry Michael - I saw you quote Aaron and must have had a senior moment.
I hadn't heard all of that.
I live in the town that is home to Thunderbird boats which makes Formula boats. They are really slow but so far no no bankruptcy. Not so for another large brand made here - Fleetwood RV's. They have been in bankruptcy and sold to another company. They are hiring back about 500 people by late fall from what I have read in the local papers.
Thanks for the info on Genmar.
