When is it time to get a new muffler?

If I'm not mistaken, on the beacon marine parts page that they had replacement mufflers for the trojan boats. I think mine is working okay. I mean its not too loud or anything. I got thinking about it because the co2 alarm was going off last weekend. It turns out the batteries were dying so it started beeping. I don't really have a co2 problem, but started wondering about the exhaust system. I'm in fresh water so mine probably will last longer than some others, but when is it time to replace. Thanks for the advice.

When they leak... They are among the last things I think would wear out, the exhaust gas is fairly cool once it gets there.

If there glass or plastic they could damaged by low water flow ,if cast they could rust out , ran in to that on a Owens

Mine is stock. Installed when the boat was built in late '76. It's been used in fresh water since day one (raw water cooling system) and it has not failed. I think the only area of failure to be concerned about would be the hoses. If I replace them I'd go to silicone (because I'm a silicone guy and they last forever). I've had the CO monitor go off a couple of times, but this was because of the "station wagon" effect - having the cockpit vinyl "windows" on the transom area unzipped from the screening, which allows the exhaust gas to be sucked back into the cockpit.

I learned to keep the back cover windows zipped up and the side windows open. On long trips I'll use a fan mounted on the hatch cover over the cabin door - running off the inverter. The CO monitor is mounted on the hardtop ceiling just a bit forward of the center.

Most of the time I keep the side and back covers off because I'm a true fair weather boater!
