Engin quiting at 1700rpm
Ok, I am about at my wits-end. As many of you know or remember, I had a problem with the engin quitting around 1300 rpm. I replaced the coil, fuel pump with a high output electric “yes it is an e pump†and last but not least all the filters. This I did last season, it seemed to work well last year, however I never run the bugger up on a high rpm anyway. Again, I cant go over 1700 rpm, if I do she will sputter and quit like a lead tub. Does any one have a wonderful idea as to what this can be and the fix.

Back to the gas tank. Galvanized/steel? If so you may have what I had - rusting on the inside due to years of condensation over the winter. Check your filters - water sep and in-line for traces of brown/red powder. I replaced the tank with poly and that was over 7 years ago - no issue with hesitation, etc. Rebuilt the carb last year and it ran like a champ. This is a stock '77 Chysler 318/225hp at 4000 rpm w/ 4bbl carb.

Sounds like lack of fuel flow to me. Check the anti-siphon valve at the top of the tank. Often these get partially plugged restricting fuel flow.

Sounds like fuel starvation.
Anti syphon valves, rusted pick-up tubes with pin holes sucking air from tank... dependent on fuel level and boat's attitude while trying to get up over 1700 rpm, water/dirt in fuel.
Try drawing from a portable fuel tank to eliminate the fuel source.
When you say quit, does the engine shut off? Possible ballast resistor getting hot and cutting the ignition?

I don't think its a carb. issue as I belive he has fuel injection (351 FI )
still would check the fuel filter and fuel press . I would check the press. to see if it drops when the engine dies . check for trouble codes also , losse sensor conectors .

I love this forum, I am sorry I don’t get up here to much lately.
When I got back from my trip, I replaced all the filters. There was a little bit of junk within, but not enough to cause a problem. This coil does not have a ballast resistor, it uses a resistive wire, and let me tell you, she do get warm lol. I do believe that the pump would work regardless of the anti siphon valve because it is a vain pump that is high volume “ unless it was plugged†and then uses a separate pressure regulator.
One of you bring up a very good point, both times I have had this problem is going on the trip to the BBQ. I leave port with a full tank, and cruse at the 2100 rpm. Both times on the way back once the gauge is around 3/4 this problem pops up. I wonder if I do have a hole in the pickup. As for the gunk in the tank, I had removed the tank and washed it out , wow what a bunch of junk came out. This I did when I replaced all the deck with real teak.
Thank you every one for your response.

Yes Rick, that's why I suggested using a portable fuel tank to run your boat. If it runs fine, then start looking for holes in pick-ups, A/S valves, etc.

It takes us a while, but I see a trend towards looking at the tank.....Mr Elevman replaced his with poly. I replaced mine with poly. The stock galvanized tanks will rust on the inside, and then rust through eventually. Wash em out but that won't stop the rust.
Then it's whole 'nother kettle of fish.....but it'll smell a lot like GAS IN THE BILGE!

Randy, Sorry to pirate this thread, but tell me about your poly tanks? I've heard that after a while, you can "smell" the gas through the tank walls, even though they are not leaking. Have you noticed this? Anyone else? perhaps this is just a rumor put out the by guys that make metal tanks.
On our F36, the rear tanks were pulled years ago. The saddle tanks in the engine room are painted pretty white, and don't look to be original but I have not idea on age. I happy to report that I've never had any rust problems
.
Our boat sits a little heavy in the bow though. I'm guessing its because their is not weight aft since the original tanks are gone. One of my projects it to pull the rear decks and replace, I thought I would throw tanks in again when I have the floor out. I'd be curious to know how the poly tanks are working for everyone since they never rust, and I might keep the boat anothe 30 years, its probably the way to go.
