Post by pilgrim32 »

Has anyone had to repair or replace what is called the shaft logs or rudder logs? and would this mean repairing the fiberglass components of the hull or the shaft flanges and stuffing boxes? and rudder post flanges??I quess the real question is does the fiberglass wear or deterate in these locations after time?? Info needed for 1978 F32 any reply's would be great.

What is wrong with the shaft logs that makes you feel they need replacing? It's pretty rare that they need to be replaced.

The piece attached to the hull is just a chunk of bronze with a hole through the middle. It's bolted in place with three bronze carriage bolts. The bolts run from outside the boat, where the shaft comes out, to inside the boat around the shaft log.

All the shaft sealing is done by the gland nut and packing, which is attached to the shaft log base by a short piece of reinforced hose.

You need to pull the shafts to replace anything but the packing.

shaft logs and rudder logs for F32

Post by pilgrim32 »

Obeejr Thanks for the reply. I'm presently looking to purchase a F32 and while looking at the shafts at the point of entry and exit from the hull on some of the vessels for sale there seemed to be some type of a beed of sealant like 5200? Just was wonder if the F-32 in 1977-78 vintage had any problems with any of fiberglass in this location of the shaft passage way becoming brittle, broken or worn. Some of the models for sale say they have resently had new shaft logs replaced and I figured they meet the stuffing box and associated equipment and not the fiberglass so I thought I'd throw the question out there for some help?? Thanks for any reply's

What about a collar that's frozen to the shaft? Anyone run into this?
