Rudder play on F-32 1978

Post by TADTOOMUCH »

When I hauled out for the winter I noticed that my starboard rudder has about 3/16" of play in it and the port one is nice and has no play. They both rotate fine and the starboard one leaks a little more than the port did. Is this just a packing issue or do I have a bigger problem that needs more work? Has anyone removed their rudder and replaced the bushing. Not sure how the whole rudder bushing assembly is made. Can anyone give me a description of the assembly and what might need replacement/

Rudder Play

Post by TADTOOMUCH »

The play is side to side. Up and down there is no play at all.
I'm sure the side to side play is probably a bad thing and will be harder and more expensive to fix than the up and down would be if things go for me the way they usually do.

Heres the drawing for the F36 rudder ... my F32 rudder is the same as far as I know.

Great!

Rossjo,

That is exactly what I needed to see. My guess is that the key on the shaft has worn or the top bearing has worn out. I doubt the packing being bad or the nut being too loose would allow that much play. Now that I have a good diagram, I can take it apart and find the culprit.

If it is side to side at the rudder you rudder port is worn and may be the rudder shaft I would replace the uper Bearing at that time

Inquiring minds (with loose rudders) want to know ...

What was the prognosis on your rudders?

Tad2 ....

What was the outcome on your rudder? I have some play in mine, and would like to know how yours came out before I tackle repacking/repairs.

Thanks you in advance, Ross

Rudder Play

Post by TADTOOMUCH »

I found out my rudder is not loose in the packing or shaft bearing. It is loose where the rudder attaches to the shaft. Both rudders have about 1/16 to 3/16" of play in them where they attach to the shaft. Is this normal or from wear? How are the rudders held on to the shaft?

See the "Tiller Arm" in the drawing above ...

Look and see if its the tiller arm loose on the shaft OR the steering rod loose.
