1972 F26 Hull Under Galley

Looking at your sketch it raises a question for me...
How close to the outer hull was the stringer when it was glassed in? I would expect it to have been in contact with it... so if that were the case it begs the question whether one should remove the boat from the water and block it correctly to get that stringer back in contact with the outer hull before making any repairs.

Were it me I would do all the repair work while the boat is out of the water with the hull correctly blocked to maintain correct bottom shape. Thereby ensuring that your repair work will not put any warp in any adjacent chines.
Just something I would think about... afterall the outside hull shape is what is important when underway. That area looks to me to be near the point of bow wake when on plane.

Ready , good thought but the stringer is in contact with the hull just not fassened th the hull. The idea to to refasen the stringer to maintane the hull form where pulled out of the water . The stringer was not bedded from day 1 . just glass in with one layer of thin glass . This is not a "Main" stringer . manly there to add some stiffness an floor suport . some of the in the water repairs will be redone out of the water as needed .

As he noted there is a leak but not at the stringer it at a "chime" nearby maybe 6-10" away , in water repairs also to stop the leak and make the trip to haul it out less worrysome , I have seen the same exact thing on a sports craft I had and on a 29 ft Criss craft , and a 20 Bertram all had flex in that area .

I have seen this type of proplems on other brands of boats also. most were built in the 70s

Well I made some progress after IDA cleared out of here.

Applied 5200 under the stiffener.

Then used some thickened epoxy and filletted the angle between the stiffener and the hull, then lapped the hull to the stringer. I still have some sanding to do to get rid of the patch but that will be done out of the water.

Hey Paul,
Thanks. I think I might haul out at Cobb's instead of Dandy Haven. I need to get out of the water before Thanksgiving and with the way the weather looks and my work load, I don't think I'll be able to get over to your neck of the woods before then. Plus, after this past storm, I'm sure a lot of pilings, planks, and other stuff is out floating in the bay just waiting to ruin someones day; you've been there... I'm basically gonna get the boat seaworthy again this go round. Like we discussed, sand off patch on the inside of the hull, reinforce from the inside, grind down bad fiberglass on the exterior, patch, prime, antifouling paint, then foam between the outer and inner hulls for additional support; also replace zincs and check shaft packing. That should get me seaworthy for some December and January striper fishing.

Come spring I'll probably get hauled out over at Dandy to do some much needed cosmetic work, i.e. paint, new railing bases and maybe even some new gas tanks.

I'll keep you updated.

Well the Paula Sea is out of the water. What i found was the chine had a few cracks in it (that's where the slight leak was) and directly under the once loose stringer that is now reattached there's was some hair line cracks. Once I started grinding the paint off, I found a patch that was done by a previous owner just aft of the stiffener. Apparently, a previous owner decided to cover the hairline crack and not fix the cause of the cracking.

I still have to add a layer of mat and fiberglass to the interior and then I'll grind a little more on the exterior. Then glass over the exterior. Seeing how I've stopped the flexing of the hull by reattaching the stiffener, I shouldn't get any more cracking. As added insurance, I'll foam in between the outer hull and inner hull which will stiffen things up even more.

All in all, not as bad as it could have been and I'm pretty happy with how things are going so far.

Oh, the travel lift at Cobbs is remote control, I thought that was pretty cool.

Well I glassed over the exterior stress cracks and started foaming inbetween the hulls. I added some pictures... That foam goes everywhere, I still need to clean that up. I used 4 lb. foam and it appears to be working better than I had hoped.

Next is a few more foam pours and antifouling paint and then I should be back in the water. So far so good. The rest of the fix/repairs can be done back in the slip where I'm not being billed for everyday I'm out of the water.

I'm back in the water!!! $450 just for haul out, power wash, 14 days on the hard, 2 of which I got for free, and launch. Ouch!! That was the most expensive part of the whole project. I still need to finish up the galley rebuild and finish putting the head back in but all that can be done in the slip.

The areas that I patched came out great. You can see where it has been done but I'm not worried about that. I was more worried about structural integrity and cost.

As for my red running gear in the picture, I figured I'd try something different this year for running gear antifouling. I used Propshield. It's a grease and you have to heat up the running gear before you apply it. To do a comparison, I used Petit's Underwater metal antifouling paint forward of the shaft zincs (which is what I usually use) and used the propshield on the shaft after of the shaft zincs and on all the other running gear. I'll let you know how well this stuff works when I haul out again. If this stuff doesn't work, I guess I'll fork out the big bucks for PropSpeed next time.

Well I'm putting the galley back together after repairing the hull under it. I glassed over the foam on the interior. Didn't really take my time or do much of a professional finish job on the interior because it was going to be covered anyways by the galley.

It's been a long winter with other chores to do, that is why this has taken so long. After I put the galley back together. It's on to the new Air Conditioner.

It's true, the only thing that works on an old boat, is it's owner. Thank God I have an understanding wife...

Galley is done. Thank God.

I was gonna lower the counter so I could push the microwave all the way back under the side deck to get more counter space but that was just too much work. So I ended up raising the shelf under the starboard window so the microwave can at least go under that. I then had to make new sliding doors for the cabinet because the old ones were ugly and now too short. I also moved the sink forward about 3 inches.

My next project is almost finished also, New Air Condition!!! Just in time for summer. I'll post that in a separate post.
