well, I only wanted the original because I figure it would be cheaper than dropping $400 on a brand new one if I could find a good used one.
$400 is a big price for one item

sure is! if you cant find a used one. but do you need to rapidly charge your batteries? really need 40 or 50 amps? might use something less if just trying to charge at the dock when youve been out all day. alternators can put back alot if they have a high output.

A good rule of thumb is have a battery charger that has an output equal to 20% of your battery bank capacity.

Do you have any consignment or surplus shops in your area? I just bought a Charles s/s case, looks like new, charges 4 batteries at 20 amps for $45 in a local consignment shop.

Not a pawn shop. It's a place where boaters take their used or excess gear to sell it. There's one in Oriental in an old house that is floor to ceiling with used boat gear. There is also a surplus shop over at Jarrett Bay Boatworks that has all kinds of neat stuff for pennies on the dollar. I do not shop at West Marine since I found these places. I also found a Marine Supply Store in Beaufort, NC that supports the Charter boats where you can get zincs and bottom paint for 2/3 of what W.M. charges. Look around, you do not have to pay retail for this stuff.
