Should use a fuel pump designated for marine use only. There is a hose which will draw fuel up through the carb in the event the fuel pump diaphragm leaks.
Normally when the diaphragm leaks on a automobile, fuel would leak out the weep hole, externally and onto the ground.
You don't want a fuel leak into the engine compartment.

Are you running the chrysler engines, i have GM engines, would love to find them at autozone, but have not taken mine off and checked. One engine is not getting fuel, i have yet to diagnose, but with the ethanol fuel problems, i was going to buy spares to have at sea just in case.

thanks.

they may look the same on the outside but they're not. spend the extra money and get a marine pump. And keep in mind a auto one can fail and pump gas in to the block also. Been there done that cost me a 383 stoker in a Chevelle. Every time I touch my gas system I think can this go BOOM. And are all parts marine use

A marine fuel pump has two diaphrams with a relief hole in between the two, sometimes fitted with a clear glass bowl (mine are) or other devise. If the first diaphram fails the bowl will have gas in it and the second diaphram continues working giving you time to replace the pump without getting gas in the crankcase or in the bilge. When I check the oil before startup I also look at the bowl. I have replaced one of the fuel pumps in my twin engine boat because the bowl had gasoline in it. I believe that bowl saved my boat.

The Mercruiser 7.4L in my 26 has a belt driven fuel pump ... the belt also drives the sea wtaer pump (so, if the belt breaks, your engine is protected from loss of colling by virtue of the fuel being cut off as well).
