Hynautic Steering reservor

Post by mpulsev10 »

Mine looks pretty worn and rusted, however it still has a very small bit of pressure and steering seems ok. How do i check proper fluid level and how many PSI should i charge it to ? How would i know if it needs replacing ?

thanks.

this is very similar to my set up:

We use a bicycle tire pump on ours. We maintain about 25 lbs on ours. I have not checked it in awhile. Might be a good idea to check it with the cold season coming on. Ours has two little windows to show the fluid level. I t should be up in the upper window about half way I believe. Do not fill up all the way. You should have a plug on top for filling. Make sure you have the pressure off before filling.

Spec is 20-30 psi. In cold weather it can drop PSI . even if the press was real low it will not efect the steering . In the winter mine will be down to 10 psi or so , when it warms up it goes up so I just leave it alone .

We had a small leak on ours and while we were out fishing I lost steering. I could spin the wheel continuously in one direction and it did nothing. I let my son pilot while I put put pressure in the resivour. When we got back in I found the leak and tightened it. Haven't had a problem since but I do not want that to happen again. Especially while docking. When mine gets down to under 20 psig I pump it up. I have not had to pump it up in a long time but since winter is coming on , now is the time to check.

a common leak point seems to be right behind the helm

I assume the 11m layout is similar to the 10m. If you remove the access panel in the cabin, you'll probably see fluid dripped down on the bottom.

It's seal right behind the wheel that's leaking. An fairly easy fix from what I've read but I haven't done it yet. In the meantime, I used "high mileage" ATF fluid which swells up the seals a little.

We do have a acess panel by the dinette area behind the pilot console. When it is removed you can get to the wiring of the pilot station and the steering control valve. I did check it and it did look like it had leaked some at one time but it does not leak now. We did find a lead on the hydraulic valve actuator. I little tightening with a wrench and it stopped. After one has lost their steering one will always want to keep and eye on it. Just for safety sake. Now that we have started to fish for Striper, it will be one thing I will glance at before we go out. It only takes a second to check it. It will probably be ok but still a good idea to check along with the usual checks we make.

I would use the Hynautic Fld its costly but the system won't hold much . ATF is a substitute for emergences not reg. use . ATF is a heavier weight fluid and can cause stiff steering in cold weather

You have a $1000+ system is worth saving 10 bucks ?
