Marine Plywood??

Post by Sea Ya »

Ok redoing my aft deck on the F26 I am using wood. Should i get marine plywood or nice sanded layered plywood and coat all sides very well with resin. I will be applying Epoxy to finished product. Comments, suggestions? Open to all advise. Besides having someone else do it :)

I would start with the best materials possible. It is a shame to put many hours into a project only to see it start to come apart 1 or 2 years later due to a few 'saved bucks' on parts. Even if you do epoxy regular plywood on all sides, it will eventually get wet at fastener holes and dings. Use the marine ply.

yes use the the marine ply - we just did this as well, marine ply - and since its wood and against the outside conditions, no matter what type of sealer you use, you can never put too many coats on in my opinion (oh and this project is not hard at all, good choice at doing it yourself)

"Marine Ply" is the way to go. There are less voids in it than average ply, the adhesive used to laminate it is water proof & it's lighter weight than most ply wood.

On a previous boat, I re-decked the cockpit. I was going to use marine ply then glass over it. But I happened to go on http://www.discountlumberliquidators.com
and found an odd-lot of unfinished 3/4" thick teak. It was ready to install and was the same price as just the cost of the marine plywood!

I had to let it turn grey though...was too hot on my feet.

that sounds about right to me - i think we might have paid 120 or 130 - its definitely not cheap but its well worth it - it sucks now but in 3 years you will be glad to see its still holding up - good luck

See Ya,

Not sure if you already bought the plywood, but there is a company in FL that deals with all sorts of marine plywoods. site is http://www.worldpanel.com.
I used them a few years back to get some teak and holly plywood that I used to redo the cabin sole of my 77 F-26. Good prices and they know a lot about different marine plywood options.

Good luck
